Question on a CWMU

I am not sure how this happened but I drew with zero points a CWMU tag for deer with my second choice??
Work for me.I am excited but I wanted to see if anyone has any experience with the Old Woman plateau CWMU? I am more an avid elk hunter so any 4 point would be cool for me but just wondered if anyone knows anything about this CWMU

If you truly drew it as a second choice, it means there were more tags available than people that put it as their 1st choice, and that's not a good thing. You should be able to see harvest data for that cwmu on the dwr website.

LAST EDITED ON May-25-17 AT 07:38PM (MST)[p]I hunted the General Deer Muzzy hunt near there last year I hunted hard for a couple of days and seen one doe running away from some guys cutting wood. We covered a lot of country in the mornings and evenings in a side by side and seen NOTHING. We said hell with this and packed up and went fishing the rest of the week. We had Colorado Deer tags so catching fish was more important than getting meat at that point. We was on the back side of the CWMU you drew.Theirs a reason you drew second choice on that tag.

I've hunted elk on the Old Woman CWMU. as has my son. I know the owner/outfitter/manager of the property very well, he operates a very public hunter friendly CWMU. I've hunted four different CWMUs, and he is the best of the best, as far as my experience has been.

Having said that, the mule deer population has been in the dumpster in this area for over 20 years, very few deer, fewer buck deer and still fewer bucks over two years old, not just on the CWMU but on the US Forest land as well.

I'm sure you'll find a buck on the Old Woman CWMU but it would surprise me, and most likely the owner/operator as well, if you killed any thing older than a two year old. It could happen I suppose but it would be very unusual.

Unless he's changed his operating practices in the last year or two, I don't think he even applies for mule deer tags to sell. It's almost exclusively an elk unit.

I believe Mike would tell you right up front what you can expect for deer and you should believe what ever he tells you, he's straight up honest about what he has on the ranch.

Drew this same tag about 5 years ago. Saw a couple does up on top. Finally on the last day I was going to be able to hunt I found where a few deer had been using the lower pinions at the bottom of the plateau. Ended up not taking a deer but if I were you that is where I would put in most my effort.

Sounds pretty side by side labor intensive.
