Hey guys has anyone hunted unit 045 in Nevada? Drew an early season archery tag for 043-046. Was looking at hunting the Tobin mountain range. Doesnt look like there is much for road access which will allow me to backpack in and get away from other hunters.

How's the water in Nevada? We had an awesome winter in California and we have water everywhere in the high elevations but I'm a little concerned that water may be scarce in Nevada.

Water is scarce in the Tobins but there are a couple of springs/creeks. I haven't hunted it in a long time but when I did the deer would rotate off the mtns and hit the alfalfa fields then back up and move on to the next one. They'd just keep rotating from field to field. I did take a few nice ones and saw very few hunters.

"3blade" Thanks for the response.

My plan is to park the truck towards Tobin peak assuming I can get up there. Then I will pack in and head North. I am planning to hunt for up to 6 days setting spike camp as I go. I'll just plan on hitting each drainage as I move further North.

What's the terrain like in that area? Looks to be allot of sage from Google earth.

We are having scorching hot temperatures in Nevada right now. All of the critters are very thirsty. I suspect they won't be too far from water so you will need to keep that in mind. Also you are going to get pretty darn thirsty yourself.
I recommend you plan your hunt around available water. Good luck to you.

Its sage and pinyon mostly. There will be small aspen stands down lower where the water is. Its steep country.

That's my biggest concern! If I can't find water I'll have to head back to the truck every couple days or just pack a bunch in with me. I have done that before and it's not fun.

Any recommendations as where to come in from? North towards China or south torwards Tobin?

Had the Rifle tag in 2014 saw a lot of deer in the Tobins north of MT. Tobin. Mostly 3x3's but did see a couple 130-150 4x4's. Ended up taking a 145inch big 3x3 last week of hunt. So deer are there.

Awesome! Thanks for the info. How's road access? Is it worth taking my ATV to get to the top or will a four wheel drive truck work fine?

I chukar hunt some of that country, STEEP!

I see some pretty good bucks in November when they are easy to see.

My typical chukar hunt is 2-2.5 hours getting elevation climbing and side hilling. Then less than a hour and a half down. And that's dropping off both sides substantially and trying to cover the top half of the ridge on both sides on my way down.

Fast as I can go up, slow and covering as much ground as possible on the way down. I hate it but there are birds there.

Longtime lurcher and my first post. Thanks for the insight into the unit on this thread. I drew a youth tag for 043-046 and I’m going to try archery. I was hopeful to get some advice as I’m a novice in general and I don’t know the area. Thanks in advance!

I did notice that. I don't think I can create a new thread since I'm such a new member so I tried to find the most recent and relevant one. I'll Try and create a new thread now and see what happens.

Thanks for your guidance and feedback. Much appreciated.

Yes a lot has changed in four years a lot of the guys on this thread are long gone.
Which brings us back to this thread, you have to understand this website, every year guys who never get online and share anything, ie new members get a tag and then want the guys in here to help them out.
Sometimes they do and sometimes they don't. But then that is the last we hear from them they don't come back on and let anyone know if the info helped or not.
Try asking in the Nevada thread ask for some guidance not where to go. Scouting is part of the deal and after a while on here you will get more help.

On this you have to give him a pass he likely 15 years old not much to contribute in his few years hunting. I wish I knew that unit only been 046 hunting. Pm I know a little about the whole unit which is big.

Did you hunt yet? I'm headed out that way this weekend although I won't be up high though. If I see anything, maybe can give you some insight.

Thanks. Started a new thread and got feedback from one fellow. I left an update on the new thread. Appreciate the insight.
