Oops! I put my kids in for Kaibab late season 12A east just cuz it was hard to draw and they needed their points. Didn't know anything about the unit other than it's hard to draw. Well, my oldest boy drew the tag. Now what?

I didn't think I'd have time this year. Already took vacation days from work in January for a random bison bull tag that I drew with only 6 points. Have 8 tags (elk, deer, antelope) to fill this fall between me an my 3 kids. Now I gotta make the time for another tag. Gosh darn the luck!

So, is this a good tag? Anybody have any experience on this unit during the late season?

Late tag is a GOOD TAG. IMO
Take the time off for him it will be worth it a few years down the line.
IF you can't take off, then work more hours and pay a guide to help him.

It's only a good tag if you like to hunt and kill big deer. Not everybody does. Some people want to see a lot of deer and aren't very picky about what they will shoot. Most young hunters fall into this category. If your son might get into hunting big deer, this hunt could light a fire in him that will last a lifetime. I would put all I could into this hunt for him.

When my son was 19 (10 years ago), he killed a 188" buck on that very same hunt. But, it was a tough hunt and that was the only buck we saw that was bigger than about 160". PM me if you'd like some info. The good areas are the same from year to year.

Did you purchase the tag guard? You could give it back if you did. Its probably a better tag than most of the others your family has, so you could just treat it that way and make it the priority.

Gentleman, I do appreciate all the support. We are definitely keeping the tag. My son is very excited about it. We've heard the unit/hunt has improved quite a bit in the past 8 years. He drew it as a non-resident with only 6 points, so really beat the odds. We plan to give it heck. See what happens.

This can be a great hunt for big bucks if you get snow & cold weather to bring deer off Kaibab Top & they get to winter grounds in the Sage areas. Hunted the North Canyon Area about 22 miles down the Forest Service Road from the highway entrance. When the rut hit after a big snow, big bucks really came out & went after the does. Can be a great rut hunt ! But, this is worth getting a good guide with experience in that area as others have advised already. Likely to never draw this tag EVER again , a max effort is advised, could be a monster buck year IF weather co-operates ! E M me with any questions or if I can help in any way. Always happy to help another hunter !
Good Hunting !
