LAST EDITED ON Jul-23-17 AT 04:49PM (MST)[p]So after 13 years I drew the tag & am headed down to elk ridge after a big ol buck. I know these days that unit is more known for giant bulls but there's still a few monster bucks down there. I'm headed down this next weekend to do some scouting & the weekend before opener. Anyone that has been there recently, how is the unit looking in general? How is access? Has there been abundant moisture? I'm planning on going in through south cottonwood & focusing on the area around horse mountain, north long point, poison canyon, round mountain, & the head of south cottonwood. In years past I've ran into some nice bucks around those areas during archery season. Am I leaving any areas out?.....are there any other spots that I could turn up a nice buck? Thanks for any insight. I can also be an extra set of eyes for anyone with an elk tag down there.....we could exchange info on any good bucks for info on any big bulls....win win for all!!

Check around the campgrounds too.

Wahoo!! Glad you finally drew the tag. You know the area well so finding a giant shouldn't be an issue if you are patient :) Grandpa missed a few giants last year around Woodenshoe and in 2015, after we had tagged out, Dad and I saw a few monsters around Poison Canyon. The area has been getting pretty consistent moisture the past few weeks so that could change up the patterns of the animals if water is more abundant. In 2015 water was everywhere so we just put in more miles finding the bucks as they transitioned between feeding and bedding areas early in the morning and late evening.
Good luck, you deserve to hang your tag on a true trophy my friend.
Let me know how your hunt goes.
