I am trying to get a better idea of what caliber of bucks to go after. This is my first time hunting archery mule deer and don't have experience judging bucks. Any and all comments on this guy are welcome. Would you go after him on a general unit? As a first time hunter? What would you put him at score wise? Inside and outside spread?

Not sure score wise but id shoot that buck on any tag ive ever had and every tag ill ever have the rest of my life hes a good buck for sure! I love the look of velvet mule deer!

LAST EDITED ON Aug-08-17 AT 05:25AM (MST)[p]for your first archery buck, that would be an outstanding deer! i would recommend making multiple stalks on deer and get familiar with that part. dont worry too much about score, the trophy is the hunt! thats a nice buck though. im guessing 25-28" outside spread. probably a 150-160 buck. good luck with him and keep at it!

"Shoot Straight"

Great buck with any weapon. With archery, there is very few that would pass a shoot at him. SCORE - Would you be happy with him (yes). Then shoot and never look back or second guess yourself.

Don't get caught up in score, shoot what makes you happy. You have to start somewhere. You need to decide if you have to eat your tag and don't shoot anything, will you be satisfied in your hunting season? SOme people are happy getting out and enjoying nature, others have to kill something, then you have those who aren't happy if they didn't kill the biggest buck they seen. Me with only one mulie under my belt would take the shot if given one. Remember with archery getting a shot may be hard enough.

Please clarify "first time hunter" in your thread. Are you a whitetail hunter that is going on your first MD hunt? Or are you a first YEAR hunter? .

If you are a first year hunter, you shouldn't shoot that buck. Shoot something much smaller and give me the coordinates of that buck.

That is a great deer for a general unit and you would be hard pressed to find anyone that would pass him up on a gen tag.

As for score: I'd put him in the 'wide enough, tall enough' category!

Sorry I should have clarified that its not my first time hunting mule deer but rather my first time archery hunting. I shot a very small buck in my teens but have not really hunted since then. I had a friend convince me to try archery and I hunted for the first time last year usuccesfully. I only saw a couple bucks more than a mile away. Im hunting a different area now and have located several bucks I would be thrilled to take. This guy being my favorite. I am going after him come opening day whether he scores good or not. I was more just curious so that I can improve in field judging them. I really do appreciate all of the feedback and I like what you have all said about it being about the experience. I have never had more fun scouting for deer than I have this summer and I can't wait to test my abilities in a couole weeks. I know it won't be easy and thats why I love it. Thanks again guys

I'm shooting with any weapon. Even if I had a 190" on the wall with a rifle, if this fellow gives me a shot with a bow, I'm shooting!

He's a shooter on any GS unit in this state. You're an idiot to pass that deer with a bow. Especially if it's your first one

Thaks for the reassuring words;)

I'd put that buck in the high 150s or low 160s. Good enough to make P&Y.

Get ready for change because it's going to happen!

Don't get caught up on size my friend. You'll likely never even get a shot at him.

But, since you're asking, yes, that is a shooter for any first timer.

LAST EDITED ON Aug-15-17 AT 11:24AM (MST)[p]yes he is a great archery buck. id guess him in the low 160's

Nice archery buck. I think hes gonna be mid to high 140s. Maybe make it to 150...maybe. But if you like him that is what matters. He is a young deer that would probably fill out pretty nice in a couple years.

IF U like him take him, I hope you get another chance.
