LAST EDITED ON Aug-09-17 AT 11:44PM (MST)[p] Long time reader here at MM, but first time poster! My brother was just called by the DWR and informed he was next in line from someone who surrendered the tag! He has till tomorrow at 4 to let them know if he's taking it or not. He only had 3 points.
He's in the UT National Guard and just so happens to have drill the weekend of the hunt. So assuming he can get a pass from his superiors, we will be hunting this November!

We have never stepped foot on the unit, so my question is, where's a good place to start? I've heard about a place called "the fence" but have no clue where it is! Any advice from you MM'ers would be truely appreciated! He's a great brother, father, who couldn't be more deserving of the opportunity!

Thanks!

I assume "the fence" is in reference to the fence that runs along Hwy 89 there to prevent wildlife crossing anywhere other than the tunnels built under the road for that purpose. A ton of deer will gather on each side of the fence throughout the migration. Doesnt seem like a very fun way to hunt to me, sitting watching a tunnel or a barrier fence, but to each their own.

I would focus your efforts below 89. A lot of deer will have crossed over by that time.

Never saw a deer during daylight hours even near the tunnels but on each side there out and about for about a couple hours after sun up before they bed, seemed to me they use them at night.

Get a map download and go hunting. That is the easiest deer hunt in the world. Lots of management bucks. 24+" 3x4 is easy to find. Good luck.

by "the fence" they mean the borders of private ground and the alton CWMU/heaton ranch. Just hope you have a clean, one shot one kill so they dont jump the fence....

I can give you some very specific places that will have deer during your hunt. It should be a fun hunt looking at a lot of migrating deer. If you are patient and enjoy the hunt for what it is you will have a great time. Chasing bucks in the red sand is hard to beat. We will be camped in that area( Probably Kanab) hunting 12B West in AZ at the same time as your hunt, I'd be more than happy to let you know what we are seeing on the Utah side as we are coming a going.

PM Sent

Man some of those responses made me chuckle, be careful the info you find on the interweb. :)

Do you want a guide ? I have a guide friend. That sent me some pictures of a great management buck on that unit.If you want to go guided pm me and I can get you his info.

he simply stated "I've heard about a place called "the fence" but have no clue where it is!" and I was answering from MY perspective of the question

If you don't know then why did you tell him the wrong place ,didn't your pop ever teach you if you don't know what your talking about your better off not saying anything at all.

No, actually we stay as far from private as possible. Its usually a zoo around the fences anyways

Yeah that makes sense. It's weird that there would be anyone hunting up by the Alton during the Management Hunt.

there are always a few resident deer that cross back and forth but I think most deer have migrated by then.

Muley, I drew for that hunt and your Dad had some interest in going down there with me. Now I'm having second thoughts because if I take him with me scouting, you will just tell everyone where to go.

Just kidding the words out to the world anyway.

Cannonball,
You have secerts about the Pauns that I'm sure no one will ever know. My knowledge is pretty basic. Lol.

Keep an eye out for any giants headed south. We're gonna have our work cut out for us on 12B West. And either way let's plan on dinner at Houstons at least one of the nights I'll buy and we can talk about curly maple and chasing archery bucks on the TV Towers.

Sounds good. If my grandson gets his hunter safety completed, I am going to mentor him down there.

Hope you find a big one.

LAST EDITED ON Aug-21-17 AT 08:46PM (MST)[p]We spent a ton of time north of "the fence" and the last day south of it,if I did it over again i'd spend a lot more time road hunting the south side.we saw hundreds of does north of the fence so we stuck to that side we did see a few mature bucks but the one day spent on the south side produced more mature bucks I feel

Bye the way Muley someone told me President Trump build a 15 ft fence on the Arizona State Line to keep the illegal deer from going into Arizona. What are you going to do?

That was the other end of AZ and I do all my coues deer hunting in NM so I was ok with it. He ran the plan past me and a few of the Glenwood Mafia and we all approved.
