After 12 points, I finally drew a Paunsaugunt rifle tag for 2017!

Would anyone be willing to share your experiences and insights?

I look forward to learning as much as I can before the hunt.

Thanks!

Finally?

I'd say You Lucked out Drawing it with only 12!

Good Luck!

Back Me Off to 1,700 Yards,650 is a Little Close & I'm Not Comfortable with it!

A GUT SHOT at 1,700 Yards will Still Make Some Good BRAGGIN Rights so I Can Say I At Least Hit Him!

You should have been on the unit learning already. It's easier to find the bucks when they are in their summer range and in velvet. Get out and learn the roads and the area. Have a great hunt Mr lucky !

I spent last weekend driving the roads to get some familiarity with the area. It's a massive unit. Given that it's a migration hunt, I didn't see much in the way of deer activity where I focused ( lower elevation ). I spent a little time on top of the plateau and saw a few deer up there.

From what I can tell, the deer should be in the lower part of the unit by the time the rifle hunt rolls around.

One thing about this website is you can't just ask for help on your very first post. It offends a lot of peeps on here that's why you are not getting any help.

For some reason you have to give your whole life history including name, date of birth, SS#, your whole hunting life experience, and where you live, to get any help.

I don't know anything about that unit as I'm still building points myself but good luck on your hunt. You beat the odds now go get a big one!

Thanks for the heads up. Yes, I am new the forum and eager to become aquainted. I certainly want to be resourceful to others on the board wherever possible.

I've spent the last 12-15 years building points for limited entry tags. While waiting, I typically purchase over the counter tags for deer, elk. Hopefully, I can offer some insights to hunting / fishing areas where I have spent time.

In terms of drawing tags I hunted Colorado unit 22 mule deer last year. 3rd season Rifle. Also a migration hunt. We each got a descent buck. Learned a lot and happy to share what I learned.

A few years ago I hunted Wyoming bull elk in unit 100. Red desert area that was a very unique experience. We were fortunate to get 3 nice bulls in 4 days. Learned a lot about the area.

Alaska fishing- for those interested in heading to Alaska, I've spent about 70 fishing days days up there over the years. Happy to offer my insights on timing and where to go - with very specific details.

Thanks again,

You will be just fine. You are right, it is a migration hunt. The deer will be moving come Oct 1, regaurdless of the temps. If you hunt Johnson Canyon and the side roads on the East to Nephi Pasture or the west side, you will see deer. I liked hunting south of the highway too. We saw some good deer. There are some water holes over there to hit. But I think you will be just fine. Good luck!!!

Follow Robiland's advice. You can't go wrong in the areas he cited.

The hardest part of the hunt is literally competition. Because of the unit, there will be a lot of people there, only about 1/5 of which have a tag.

Also, enjoy the hunt. You will comb through a lot of deer, and some very nice bucks. Take one that looks good to you. DO NOT get caught up on "score".

"Therefore, wo be unto him that is at ease in Zion!" 2 Ne. 28: 24

Everything you know about mule deer hunting throw it out the window. Those deer have a set migration route, and if you're 100 yards from that corridor you won't see squat. You need to cover a lot of ground and plan on looking through 5' tall sage brush. All the main outfitters hit those places listed above, and they just travel back and forth between them.

Gentleman,
Thank you for your insights. I actually drove Johnson Canyon Road last weekend; spent a little time in Nephi Pasture. It's definitely thick country! Hard to imagine how you can ever see the deer through all the sage and junipers.

I was looking forward to some solitude on this hunt; knowing it's over a million acres and a lot of public land. It sounds like there will definitely be some crowds. Oh welll!

Hopefully I'll get down there one more time before the hunt.

Thanks again,

We tried the old trick of getting high and glassing, I'm not joking when I say the guys running the roads saw more animals then those up high glassing. Cover as much country as possibly along those migration corridors. You could always call David with North Rim Outfitters.

I was told by a local last year to road hunt at prime time first two hours of morning and the last hour of the day and he was spot on!

Thanks everyone. I'll bring the UTV razor as it seems like driving roads is the productive method. As much as I like traditional spot and stalk, we have to take what works.

I will get down there again before the hunt starts.

Just pray that you get some good weather, by that I mean some snow and cold temps. If it is hot and dry like it is a lot of the time the hunting is tough. The bucks will move mostly at night and the first and last hour of daylight. Johnson canyon is where you will see all the traffic of people without a tag. Which is most of the people you come across. For every tag holder in the unit there will be 10 that do not have tags. And believe me they will be out kicking the brush looking just like you. The pasture is a good spot as are the breaks to the north of it. West of the air strip is a good place to be. Stukumpah road between Johnson canyon and Deer Springs Ranch air strip is a top destination. The best thing I can tell you to is spend every minute of daylight out in the field hunting. Pack a lunch and go back to camp after dark. If the weather is good the deer will move most of the day. Spend your time on the small end of the glass.
Good Luck

My friend, become familiar with the guide's and their outfits. I have hunted it many of times, but I did not spend the nights spotlighting. There are a lot of guide services down there and if you see them you are in the big buck and believe me you will know who they are. They have ALL those big buck named before the hunt.

I understand Arizona is even looking at changing the law and not allow trail cameras after the seasons starts. If it happens or doesn't happen Utah should follow suit.

I had a hard time finding a table at the shooting range with long range shooters getting ready for the hunt. They were shooting beyond 1000 yards. POOR DEER.

Have you had any luck? You may also want to try looking around the podunk guard station as I saw several around there a few weeks ago.

I was looking for elk but have come up empty handed so far.

I don't have any info for you on the pauns hunt congrats I've been trying to draw management hunt. I have unit 22 co. Tag and know nothing of the unit if your willing to send me a p.m. as to where to start I'd appreciate it

Hunted my tail off for 5 days. Saw a lot of deer but we never found anything very big. Lots of smaller to average bucks. The heat was a challenge as it was in the upper 70s and even reached 80 plus.

I took an average buck on day 5 as we needed to head home on day 6. I'm sure it got a little better the final 2 days. I spoke with several other hunters out there and they seemed to have a similar experience.

It's a beautiful area and I enjoyed my time. I wish we could have seen bigger deer but it wasn?t for a lack of effort.

Thanks again to everyone for your insights. I learned a ton about the unit.
