Velvet Scoring

I've seen some fantastic Utah and Nevada bucks posted on social media the last few days. Many of them will have scores and measurements in the descriptions.

My questions is regarding mass measurements and velvet. Is there general guideline regarding how to measure mass on a velvet buck (i.e. deduct a certain % or amount of inches), or are most of these guys likely measuring the mass "as is" with the velvet?

score it as is in velevt...take 30% off gross score...then its spot on...
Now that's my opinion...I could be wrong...

IME, after velvet dries it is very thin and makes only a small difference in the overall score of a buck. The circs are very slightly greater, but the inside spread is slightly less. Tine lengths, virtually no difference. After the required drying period, on a big mature buck the score might be 3-4 inches more than if the velvet were stripped.

30% off of a 200 inch buck would be a 140 inch buck!

3% off is probably a lot closer, 194".

Thanks guys, interesting thoughts.

Longun, I was thinking maybe up to 20% (on mass measurements only). That turns 40" of mass into 32" though, which seems like a lot. 30% takes that same buck down to 28" of mass.

I was guessing that average velvet total score is probably 10" less if it were dried and stripped. No experience in the matter, just making some guesses. Would love to hear what the experts have actually experienced.

I had a 180 class buck scored both velvet and then stripped by an OM. The velvet antlers were less than an inch better. Lost a 1/8 to 2/8 on the mass measurements but gained on some of the length measurements. (lower base lines)

LAST EDITED ON Aug-22-17 AT 09:35PM (MST)[p]Can't remember where I saw it but I think it was sci that will take a buck in velvet and they subtract 2 or 2.5% off the total gross score and that's the score they take. I think when it's killed has a big say on how much shrinkage it will have. These scores they are giving out right now is definitely a few inches bigger than what they'd be after 60 day drying period. Bucks killed in August still are quite spongy usually and they shrink pretty good. But if sci takes 2.5% I'd imagine that's pretty close. 200 inch buck would be 195. One example is the new world record archery buck. I'd imagine some of the score change is due to mis measurements originally but "green score" was 214, official score stripped after 60 days was 210 or 211 and then official panel score dropped him down to 205 7/8 I believe. Almost ten inches from the original score.

Arizona's bowhunting records program (Bowhunting in Arizona) subtracts 2.5% from velvet entries. There isn't a lot of data on accurate measurements before and after stripping, but I think it probably should be no more than that amount and possibly less.

Longing I hope that 30% was a typo. Other than that so far there are some very impressive post on this scoring subject I'm impressed with the knowledge you guys have on scoring big bucks.

Back Me Off to 1,700 Yards,650 is a Little Close & I'm Not Comfortable with it!

A GUT SHOT at 1,700 Yards will Still Make Some Good BRAGGIN Rights so I Can Say I At Least Hit Him!
