Got a call from DOW and apparently my 18 points that was not enough to get a tag on the regular draw was enough to put my at the top of the turn in call list.

I have a few days to decide....thinking I will...last year was a bust for the big point holders with the warm weather so a whole crop of big bucks did'nt get killed...some early snow up high this year...pretty good dates..

It gives me less time than I would like but thinking I will....

Any thoughts???

I would definitely do it. That hunt is really hard to scout for unless you scout it out a full year in advance.

Sending out the pings for info and getting some good stuff....I know I have to do it sometime I have "Point Stress" but gotta use them sometime...

They've likely had some snow already but it takes a chunk of snow to get them to move down. Scout hard between now and the season!

That is the crux...the snow... Word on the playground is good snow and its the hunt of a lifetime... no snow.... a bust.

I have never heard any viable plan 'B's"....are they just inaccessible....in a giant carpet of dark timber....the rut should be kicking in are they wandering looking for does...I am a plan.. a ...b...c...d....guy Just like having plans and hate to flush 18 points and go "Oh well no snow what are you going to do???

Without weather its an average unit imo, no unit is worth 18 years of waiting. You cant look at it as I have waited 18 years so I am entitled to a hunt of a lifetime. Even with snow its not a gurantee you will see numerous big deer. Without snow, there are many other units that are better imo. It's a risk, but 18 points seems like you are getting a good deal on that tag as it seems to be creeping year after year....dont let the pressure of the bonus points impact your hunt, take the tag and hunt hard you will turn up a good one.....unless it doesnt snow haha

+1 to what Bocephus said.

And I'm thinking the same thing you are, a lot of the units will have a slightly better chance of a good buck because of the warm weather last season saving some bucks (maybe better than slightly better chance). Season is only one day shorter than the longest it can be. Also seems a lot colder across the west this season than last, so all things are pointing in the right direction. 18 points is a lot, but got to roll the dice someday...

Yep yep and yep... Thought I was a shoe in with 18 and I wasn't....I think that the Gunnison basin use to draw off some big point holders and it doesn't anymore....due to some bad stuff down there,,,,

Gotta pull the cord sometime 95 percent i am pullin

Adwriter,
You've already been on at least 3 hunts that you've talked about, so why not make the fourth the grandest of them all.
I'd say go for it if you have the time.

Little Bighorn ahahahah this would be hunt number five this year the freezer is busting....got two smoking Pronghorn wall hangers....a bull elk...three pronghorn does...but this would be the big prize!!!! I have a special spot saved on the wall....a legit big muley is a blank on the bucket list....

99 percent sure I am going to do it... your right what other unit...I have the time...I am not getting younger...they have some snow base already point stress! point stress! hahaha

I have been putting in for unit 44/3 season for 15 years now. Just on the chance that if I draw maybe all the stars will line up and it turns out to be a good hunt. However as a nonresident it looks like I will never driaw that hunt so I'm going to have to find an alternative. I think you should go for it now while you have the chance. Especially fourth Season.
Last year I burned 20 points on Arizona strip and I humted the whole season and came home with tag soup. I was holding out for that once in a lifetime giant and just never did see one. It's a chance you have to take. Sometimes it works out and usually it doesn't.
If you want the one best chance for that buck of a lifetime this is probably it. I don't know of a better opportunity than 44/4th season rifle.

I have hunted 44 the last 2 years, once with my tag and last year with a buddy. We both shot deer that scored 180's. The thing that surprised me was how few deer you actually see. We looked at probably less than 5 bucks/day. Good luck have a great time.

A bird in the hand my friend. There are no guarantees you'll ever have a chance to hunt again... Just saying.

99%.....you put in for the tag wanting to draw it, one of the hardest to draw in the state and now??? if you don't take it what will you put in for? it again next year?

Don't Take it!

And if you do,Turn it Back in!

Back Me Off to 1,700 Yards,650 is a Little Close & I'm Not Comfortable with it!

A GUT SHOT at 1,700 Yards will Still Make Some Good BRAGGIN Rights so I Can Say I At Least Hit Him!

Congrats on the tag!

Are you sure you had 18, not more or less? I don't see how you would be 1 of the next five in line for either res or non-res. As res you should have drawn with 18. Just curious how this is working, maybe they went down through non-res to what it took for a res to draw?
