Posted another thread on getting a call from DOW on a tag turn in...had the weekend to ponder it,,,

I'm doing it...why not its now or never...Good rut dates..... a dark moon some snow early up there...last couple of years no snow and some big bucks that might have been killed survived... a good summer...I'm not getting any younger....

My two other "stress tags" were my Colorado Ram and Mountain goat....killed a 13 year old ram and a stud billy...DIY...so those worked out really well

One thing that stresses me is passing bucks ...180ish....that i would be thrilled to get any other time.....but will see how it plays out...

Got a new rifle this year...a "Best of the West' 7mm mag with a Huskemaw 4-16 and shot it at game five times this year and all DRT dead right there...

So why not...it just kind of came out of the blue and instead of many months to wrap my head around having such a tag I have weeks....

Pretty unanimous go for it yippppppeeeeee....I'm all in....

It'll be a good hunt. Cover lots of ground and look at lots of deer. Hunt all day, everyday.

I plan on arriving about a week early hope to run into some 3rd season guys....see if I can get something from them... want to see some deer...know the roads...best spotting locations both vehicle and foot.... do some shooting at altitude adjacent to my unit... and just get a feel for the unit...

Compiling some good info....

I like your plan.
I will pray for early snow, but my hunts are proof that I don't have much pull with the weather Gods. :) Regardless the rut will be in full swing and I am sure you will make the best of a great opportunity.
I had a 3rd season tag in 21 six years ago and it seemed to get better every day. More bucks kept showing up. The trick is finding the right one.
After freaking out for the first several days I finally decided to just have fun. Then the right buck stepped out.

So have fun... and best of luck my friend.

My advice is to walk away from a 180 buck right up until the last day. That's the best tag in the state for a 200" + Buck. I have seen some GIANTS in there during the rut, including a slick 4Pt that I'm sure would have pushed 210.

It's always a little gamble, but I agree, conditions this year seem to be headed in the right direction.

Good luck on a lifetime tag!!

Gringo I hear you.... but it still won't be easy...;) Word on the playground it gets better everyday.... I will be out every minute.... Lots of special thing about that unit...great genetics...I know a legit 205 plus buck that was a 4 1/2 year old...

I have lots more experience hunting trophy pronghorns.... You can look at hundreds of bucks and then one second of glass and you know you are looking at something special...if you try and convince yourself it is something special its not...from my experience....

That thought is going to help.....

You have a good plan and keep doing the right thing and usually good things happen...not always...but it is the best you can do...

I know a really experienced guy who was with a buddy... he told me they passed lots of 180-90 buck as they had seen a 245 trash monster and couldn't settle....ran it to the end and ended up not punching the tag...its the chance you take...
