So my step son is home from his dads and so I was able to get him on the mountain yesterday evening for his first day ever hunting deer. I hadn't been up looking at all and had no idea what to expect, but went into it expecting that we'd be lucky to see even one small buck.
Pleasantly surprised! We saw 4 bucks, including one small 4x4. It was fun. We made a play on a couple of them, but the dry leaves got us and the bucks heard us. But still, the boy was excited.
It was just a great first day of deer hunting for him.

Is everyone else experiencing some good deer hunting? Seeing many yearling bucks? Think the winter was as bad as it felt on those fawns?

As far as fawns and the winter. I have hunted the same area for close to 45 years. I saw fewer yearling bucks this year than I have seen in at least the last 25 years, maybe ever.
Overall deer numbers seemed good, just a very noticeable lack of yearlings.

That is Awesome! Hopefully he is hooked now.

Heading down to Monticello tomorrow night in hopes of finding a buck for my 14 year old daughter. She had that tag last year and we didn't even see a doe on public land. The night of day 3 I had to drive her by the private fields to get her excited and remind her what a deer looks like. She drew it this year as her 5th choice. Hopefully it will be better this go round.

Just got back from The Blues.
