Colorado State Wide Deer Tag

LAST EDITED ON Nov-15-17 AT 11:14AM (MST)[p]I won the state wide deer tag this year in Colorado and having trouble finding a big buck. Just reaching out too see if anyone knows where one is that is willing to help a fellow hunter out. I can hunt anywhere in the state until the end of November. End of December east of I-25. Don't have the money for a guide.

It's your first post.

So most people will ask where you have been looking (more information needed). Tell you to hire a guide, so forth and so on.

I am going to suggest posting this in the Colorado forum, also do a search in the mule deer and Colorado forum.

There are trends that have been set, it will kind of help you narrow your search.

Not sure when the end of your hunt occurs, but it seems as though gunnison is the place to go when the snow falls, I may be incorrect in that assumption.

You will find a buck rob you always do just be patient, this is ken by the way.

What qualifies as big for you? 200? 250? What would you shoot today?

Ozman, I have no idea where you can find a buck in Colorado, big, little, or in between but........ if you are wise you will respond to Founder, he's obviously reaching out by asking you some questions. He knows where they are and if he doesn't, he knows who does.

There's those that know and those that don't know much, like me. He knows.

Do not squander his interest in your inquiry.

I would definitely pick founders brain he's a big buck slayer. Maybe you can even invite him out to go with. I'd love to see a giant hit the dirt on the monster muleys youtube channel.

"We don't have a gun problem we have prescription drug problem."

If I had your tag, I would spend every single day, from now until the end of the month, in 44, South of Eagle, looking over as many bucks dropping down for the rut as possible. No doubt in my mind that you would look over multiple 200+ bucks, and hopefully find the caliber of buck you are looking for.

Good luck, and do us a favor, and Post up the buck that you take (hopefully)

THIS TOO!!!

Founder doesn't know where a 220 buck is, but I wouldn't argue with the posts above suggesting you hunt 44. For sure one of the best units in the state. Once heavy snow drives them to the winter range, I'd be hunting non-stop.

Are you out hunting now? Do you live in CO?

Thanks everyone. I have been in 44 a lot lately. I live only 30 minutes from the unit. I've seen a few 190s and one would hit the 200 mark. My friend and I spent a few days, a couple years ago helping the raffle tag winner and seen a hand full of big bucks over 200. There just isn't enough snow yet. Not seeing any deer where they were that year. There still scattered high to low. Hoping this storm helps out.

I'd say you're in a good position being just 30 minutes from a unit that most likely holds a buck in it somewhere that would reach that 220 mark.
It's simply just a matter of investing the time until he shows himself to you.
Maybe someone will reach out and tell you where a 220 is, but you also don't want to get into that mess of going on wild goose chases.
Quit your job, tell the wife you'll see her in a few weeks, and get out there. LOL
If I lived closer, I'd pick you up and drag you out there to find one. Sounds fun to go on the hunt.

It wouldn't hurt to have Founders patience and spotting ability either....just saying.

I wish you good luck! And we will need a photo and story.

Your in the right place, just got have that 10" of snow and the big ones will come down, Never hurts that the rut should be hitting hard now too.

Rob is a great guy and a really diligent (and successful hunter) hunter I met him in 44 this week helped me big time and I am trying to help him now...if any body every wants to help anybody this is the guy.....love a regular guy having that tag and not just a rich guy.... I have all the faith he is gonna pull it off... he is focusing on 44 for good cause but that tag is good anywhere...until the end of November and east of I25 through December....so if anybody see a pig hanging around...fire him a text

I would guess yes rob sent me a pic of a guy with a buck he helped yesterday

Good luck Rob! I am sure you will get it done.
Knowing what you already passed and that you live in great big deer country, it will happen.

Your a great guy and have good luck...

Well today is November 30, I sure hope today is your day! The best buck I ever killed was at last light on the last day, so hang in there with them. Please let us know

I just got back from spending a couple of days trying to help Rob get his Buck in Eagle county. A big buck was spotted in an area you can only get in ATV....I have been in that area.... pretty thick but doable..nothing this morning and this evening will be his last chance west of I25.... He nad his buddy are in there....I don't have an atv so waiting to hear....

I sure hope it pays off! Good luck, the bigger bucks I have seen disappeared. None big enough for governors tag, but solid.

It is stupid hot and stupid dry....

If not hopefully the eastern plains have something special for him. Is it a deer tag? Meaning can he shoot either a whitetail or mule deer?

Yeah he can shoot either...just heard from him it did'nt happen today... I am doing some research on the east and know a FT carson guy and pinon canyon might be an option as might the Air Force Academy....maybe... Anybody know anything??? not a more deserving guy...

My brother and I went looking around in 44 last weekend to see if we could turn something up. Not only did we not find a monster, but we hardly found any deer at all. We did the same thing last year at about this same time, with just about the same results. This unit definitely holds some monsters but they sure don't come easy, even this late in the year.
Good luck on the eastern slope Robert!

Just shoot a doe and be done with it already...

"Therefore, wo be unto him that is at ease in Zion!" 2 Ne. 28: 24

Anybody know anything about Pinon Canyon? I have a buddy who knows some but any info is greatly appreciated...he still has a month on the tag for east of I25

I would concentrate on units 101, 102 and 103 in the sand and sage hills. That area produces some of the largest mule deer bucks taken in the state each year consistently (Yuma County). Monster whitetails in those units and in unit 117 as well. There are a couple of outfitters who run hunts on ranches down there who may be willing to make you a good deal since you have the Governor's tag (Google search). Permission is not impossible to get in the area but it may be a little late for that as you usually have to develop a relationship with the property owner out there. Good luck!

Thanks everyone. It's been a tough year with no snow and warm weather. I'm heading out east this evening with a good friend. Hopefully we can make it happen. Big thanks to Ted for all the help. I always meet some of the best guys up on the mountains. It's great to see how us as hunters can help each other out when one gets a great tag. Thanks everyone!

I have alot of family and access to property out east of Colorado springs either side of hwy 24 calhan all the way to limon along with stuff on the north/side of i70 around genoa, Arriba and Flagler. If you make it out that way i will be around the week of xmas and would be willing to help out the best i can.

Awesome offer. Way to go. That area can produce some real nice bucks. I have family in Hugo. I wouldn't turn this offer down. Good on you Coloradoboy. Time's running out. Good luck.

Don't have any info for you, but I think this is an awesome post. Guy draws a OIL tag and plenty of people trying to help him out. That's what hunting is about!

Although I'm really looking for some pics now!!

Man, I hope it works out for him, but the guy lives in the heart of mule deer mecca, and he let it slip away. Granted the weather wasn't the best, but I'd be pulling the trigger on a sweet massed out 190! Unless he has multiple on the wall, which in that case, let's see them! I just can't imagine drawing a OIL tag, and holding out till you eat it, or hunting someones private property out east, which isn't the DREAM of that tag IMO. Good luck!

ColoradoBoy that what makes this world go around. Hats off to ya.

Been out looking for the past three days while hunting coyotes and reaching out to people. Nothing that meets the 220 plus criteria yet...

Trust me he is hunting hard hunting long and giving it hell...he is super determined...a high skill set...but also smart enough to make wise choices...the vast amount of those east of I25 220 bucks are pre scouted and go for big dollars...Rob is a working guy....

This is a guy who chose to use a bow on a rifle tag and shot my all time favorite Colorado Ram (180 plus)....if anybody can do it he can....

Tag soup. Never seen one I would shoot with this tag. A big thanks to everyone that reached out to help.

My current situation precludes me from caring about your opinion but go ahead and give voice to it anyway...

Even with the old dates you would have had issues this year in the mountains, I've never seen anything like this before. They taste like crud anyway all that matters is you had fun and saw some great animals.

Aisle #3 has the bullion to make that tag tastier.

I still think you made a good choice holding out. I would have done the same thing. If you had tagged a 190" buck in mid November you would have always doubted your decision with a once in a lifetime tag. Your odds of killing a true monster of a buck go way down if you shoot the first nice buck you see.
Thank you for keeping us updated on your hunt. Good luck in the draws this year.

Can?t kill a real monster if you can't pass on really big bucks. Good for you for sticking to your goals.
So, what's the very best buck you could?ve shot?

That's cool, sounds like you made the most of it and didn't adjust your goal. Great bucks from past hunts as well!

You are obviously no stranger to dandy bucks and that makes it easy to see why you stuck to your guns! You also seem to be a stand up guy.

Best of luck going forward.
I'm sure there are more big bucks ahead!

My hat is off to you, very few people could keep their finger off the trigger. By not shooting a 'smaller' buck early you got to hunt more days and help some people along the way. Based on those photos you have had plenty of opportunity on 'smaller' bucks. The anticipation leading up to the hunts and the time in the field would have made that tag extraordinary.

Thanks for the follow up. You have my respect for keeping your standards high for this tag.

heartshot

Congrats on the great bucks you and your dad have got in the past. OZ you are the man for sticking to your plan and not shooting one just to shoot one. You did the Mule Deer world some good!

I really don't think many hunters would of ate the tag!!! You will be rewarded in your hunting career.

You've killed a couple of fatties previously. Nice bucks!

You probably got to hunt and pass more big bucks with that tag than I have seen in Colorado in 10 years.

Best story I have read in a long time!! no sense shooting something just to shoot it. The famous line of "its not as big as I wanted but I shot him anyway" make me cringe. Go hunt for what you want to hunt if you dont see it know you gave your all to try and make it happen and didnt settle

This is an excellent story. I sure enjoyed following your hunt. Congratulations on a great experience and some great memories as well.

Thanks for the update Oz (Rob?). Never met you and never talked to you, but I was pulling for you. Nothing but positive comments from everyone on here that knows you.

I saw AWriter's post about the deer you found and called him about. I would have called him too...for help with the pack-out!! But then again, I've not killed big muleys like you obviously have.

Congrats on your success. And glad you enjoyed your quest for a 220 incher.

Thanks everyone for all the positive feedback. I had a fun time looking over a ton of deer. I saw alot of 180 and 190s and a few around the 200 mark. I seen alot of young bucks with great potential. Never gets old glassing great deer.

Good job man....

With all the BS that is around trophy hunting this whole story has been energizing. Normal dudes helping, and offering to help just because. I might sound like geezer, but I'm proud of all of you guys!

"The only thing that stops a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun"

I've enjoyed following your hunt, I admire that you didn't take any shortcuts or settle! I was hoping you were going to find him, but everybody that hunts knows that it doesn't always work that way. Anyway I'll bet you saw some beautiful country and animals that you'll always remember

I wonder what hossblur feelings would really be if he knew how many raffle tags you purchased? Just saying. Not too many years ago a hunter bought every raffle ticket at the banquet. Not anymore. Congrats on your effort and for helping others along the way? Good luck in 2018.

Oz,
You Sir are the true definition of a sportsman. It has been a pleasure following along with you on your hunt. The hunting future will shine bright on you.
Thanks again for sharing!

Been on the road...so a little late with this... but as all can see Rob knows how to get it done and done in the right way..he gave up the whole high country try...and he knows the high country because he wanted a hard horned buck....also and wanted as he said a "Buck I will never personally beat" so held out... a well done journey does not always end after the season is over and success isn't always end with a filled tag...

Late to the party, but reading through now. Incredible journey. Sounds like you made a proper season out of it. Way to go hard brother. Keep on.
