Hey guys, according to Hunting fool, I?t looks like I should be able to draw this next year if I put in. Ive got to make some calls first to see how the herds doing. I've seen some brutes harvested that are Management bucks in this unit. Just wondered if anyone has more experience with the unit and knows if there is a decent amount of quality bucks that will qualify as a Management buck on this unit. Which is ( one side can not have more than 3 points. (Not including eyeguards). The other side can have as many points as the good lord puts on the antler!

LAST EDITED ON Nov-28-17 AT 08:49PM (MST)[p]I'm down way a fair amount and was down this past week just looking at deer. There are always a fair amount of management bucks there every year and this year was no exception. You could expect to see mid 20's 4x3 of average mass about any day. to find something that is a giant 3x4 or 3x3 is not something I would count on although it can happen. Most of the management bucks are just that and nothing special so it depends on what your standards are. I did see a 2x3 that was very heavy and 27" wide. Stud of a deer and one that most guys wont shoot with the management tag. Saw another very tall heavy 2x2 (plus brow tines and even a double brow on one side)that i'm sure was 5 1/2 years old. Again I dont think most will shoot him. I really wish they would do a youth hunt down there for 2X bucks. It could be a very fun hunt but most people will shoot average 4x3 bucks in the 140"-155" class. I also saw several freaky stag bucks in Velvet and not many will shoot them either. Also it seams that #'s are up a bit sence they put the fence in along the highway. From what I understand they figure it is saving about 100 bucks lives in that unit every winter so thats nothing but a plus.

Why not have a warden and biologist on hand and make judgement calls on some bucks that kids, elderly, vets, special needs ect can use 2-10 points on and let them cull out the cull bucks?

Have a late season hunt and just tell the hunter ?that one qualifies? or ?how about that one?. Get rid of these bucks.

It's calked a management hunt not a trophy mgmt hunt......but if it takes 17+ points to get the tag then guys want a mgmt ?trophy?. Do something. Put green tags in the ears of the genetically inferior bucks, move people through the point system, and let r rip!!!

Just sayin.

"That's a special feeling, Lloyd"

Stu,
The hunt was never intended to take out inferior bucks. Its set up to give more opportunity and tags on those units with out putting added pressure on the giant bucks. I understand what you're saying and I agree it could be handled different but that would really open up a can of worms. Hunters complaining that the rules and bucks allowed by one biologist are bigger than what the other biologist let them shoot. I think it would be a huge pain the azz for the Division. Also if you did do it why more youth, seniors ect? They are already setting management tags aside for those groups.

Thanks for the feedback buys I appreciate it. I love big freaky bucks. I'm way more interested in bucks like that than a cookie cutter 24? 4x3. I'll definitely have to look more into it. I'm torn because I can also draw book cliffs north & south (rifle) but I've heard mixed things about those hunts as well. I'm not sure about the new for 2017 Henry?s Management archery and muzzleloader tag either! Either way it's a good problem to have to figure out I guess.

Most of the big "management" bucks killed during the regular hunts have been scouted out months in advance and are special deer. To find one late in the year after the migration is tuff. We spent a week on the hunt last year and didn't find a shooter until the last day. This was our first hunt in Utah so we didnmt know the area at all, you'd think locals would have a better chance at a giant but even guys using guides were having a hard time finding big management bucks.

LAST EDITED ON Nov-29-17 AT 06:55PM (MST)[p]Scouting to management bucks on the Pauns would be little very very help at all. Need to remember that the deer on the Pauns all migrate in Oct. Even if you found a great management buck early he would be long gone come the first week of Nov.
