Here is what's going on. I am trying to get my 69 year young dad a mule deer buck. He has harvested a bunch of does over the years but never a buck. We are open to Idaho, Wy, CO. Looking for an easier hunt for 150" deer. He hunted WY region F this fall and enjoyed the scenery but couldn't get him on a buck. CO LO tags under 750.00 would be fine. We don't have horses but he can walk 1-2 miles as long as it's not too steep. Any suggestions?

I would suggest to anyone who's never taken a buck to not focus on score. Anywhere you can have an easy hunt for a 150? deer is most likely a draw. It wouldn't hurt to put in for an idaho controlled hunt. I'm assuming he doesn't have points built anywhere.

Good point. I used 150" as a general reference, he would shoot a 20" 3x3 if I let him. He has no points, I have points in WY and CO. I don't think he has time to build too many points. Ha.

Unit 70 in Colorado has lots of deer, lots of small bucks, lots of roads, and a lot of easy terrain. Anyone who wanted to kill any buck could do so easily.

You could apply together in a party application for WY, using your points to increase his chances of drawing a tag.

Idaho general units were a tough hunt this year. There were a few bright spots, but it would take a lot of work and scouting to find them.

Buy a General Montana tag, and go hunt during the peak of the rut in November. I think you could get it done without much problem.

Good luck

I agree with gringo, Montana offers hunting during the rut as well as areas with fairly mild terrain. Finding a buck in that size class should be very attainable.

Montana is probably your best bet for that, seeing as you can hunt well into the heart of the rut. Eastern Montana, or Block Management would probably be your best bet. Good luck.

If you want spikes and 2pts....70 is great. Im guessing that 1/2 of the bucks killed were under 2 yrs old from what I saw. In all the data and research prior to that hunt, i am surprised that it isnt mentioned how many dinkers are killed. 70 opened my eyes to alot of things.

Honestly, find an over the counter tag and offer a non leased out farmer 750 bucks.
