LAST EDITED ON Jan-04-18 AT 03:58AM (MST)[p]John, with that many points you are going to get a great buck. I have heard fantastic things about areas but none I can personally vouch for since I too have points...11 to be exact. I drew a tag last year with 0 points in unit 36. It was good...but not at all what you are looking for. You need something amazing. Like the guys said above...do not go for any second season hunts. Usually, I wouldn't give out units over a public forum but if a unit takes 20 points to draw it is obviously really well known. So, here are literally, the most popular hunts in Colorado that I personally know very little about
22 4th season, only 5 tags given to non-residents in 2017, supposed to be a great hunt but weather dependent and quality has been going down. Again, just going off what I have read and heard.
53 4th season, gonna need to be able to get out and hike a mile or two.
44 3rd season, can be good with weather, personally I would not risk it.
44 4th season, you are gonna need more points and with point creep, this hunt is off the table for ya.
54 4th season, if I was a betting man this would be one of my top 3. The area is known for big bucks but it did just have a winter die off a few years ago. However, check success rates an it looks like 2016 was still 80% on the site I was looking at but they only had 3 tags so those figures need to be checked. I think the site was also accounting for resident success as well.
66 4th season, this is a weather dependant hunt as well with close to 100% success.
67 4th season, this should be a top pic as well. 100% success. but only 3 tags...with 20 points this one is yours.
35, 4th season, I do have experience here. You will get a buck if you get out of the truck. However, the best bucks end up on private ground. The herd here is not stellar and the best bucks wait for weather. I would not put in for this hunt with 20 points. I personally wouldnt put in if I had 15 points. Success rate was lower, around 70% I believe.
There are others, 11, 2, 201, 361, and more, and all 4th season. However, the units above will get ya a buck. Make sure to look at the success rates and understand if it is a migration hunt. I have hunted migrations and it can be really tough. Technically all bucks are migrating in 4th season but if you pick a unit that is waiting for bucks to enter the unit that can be tough. For the weather to be less of a factor pick a unit that has great summer and winter range. If the snow never comes you can hunt on the mid range terrain where the deer will be.
No one on here wants to give you a gps coordinate of the buck. You, being a hunter, dont want that either, so take the above info and have fun with it. And remember, very few guys will have hunted the units you are talking about since they are now taking 20 points. Take my info and go find a biologist or a guy that has hunted these units. Pick a unit and ask specific info about it. With only 8 posts in your history most guys will feel you shouldnt be asking specifics. They are right. If you want help now then you need to be willing to be on this site and offer help to others.
Good luck. Although with 20 points you wont need much.
