I have a Glock model 40 in 10MM that I carry in a chest holster. Comfortable, powerful accurate, and 15 shots. I wish I could shoot the big revolvers but I just can't. ????SS

Depends on what you want it for ? Defense against four legged or two leg vermin? Or survival? A small 22 maybe best if you looking to take a rabbit or pine hen. The other two guns posted up maybe be two legged but you may need a little more for a grizzly .

+1 for the Ruger Alaskan/.454 for when I am bow hunting in Grizzz country.

Then my Barretta Apex/.9mm for all other area's

Hunted all my life without a sidearm or bear spray. Had a few close calls and picked up a 45acp just for some reassurance. Would have liked a 10mm but settled on the 45acp. I know it's underpowered, but I'm only around black bears and wolves in Idaho.
THat being said, I was checking trailcams alone Friday and walked into a cub coming out of a tree. I had left my pack a couple hundred yrds down the hill. Pistol was on the pack. Bear ran off, I had a couple moments of concern, but they went away. I guess I question why I even carry the thing? A side arm is only a noise maker if the person can't use it effectively under pressure. I'm good with it just making noise and giving a sense of security. Unlikely I will ever need to use it. When we do have meat on the ground, the 20gauge youth model shotgun loaded with buck shot goes in the pack every trip.

I agree on the 12 gauge. I can't shoot a handgun for diddly. It really is a noise maker in my hand. Either that or travel with a slow fat friend who has a bad leg.

Geeze Bess! How do you hold on to THAT thing after it goes off...you nust pack super glue too...

I carry a judge here in michigan just in case i run into a wolf or bear and its great for under your bed, im thinking about the raging judge right now it gives you the option to shoot .454 also

I assume you are talking about archery hunting or perhaps blackowder? I have never understood why i would carry the weight of a pistol while rifle hunting.

Smith & Wesson 629PD in .44 mag (or your choice of caliber I guess...).

Titanium, lightweight, not one you go shoot for fun at the range but great to pack being lightweight

I carried a 3? S&W 629 (44 Rem Mag) for years in Idaho. I had the holster on my pack?s belt and I never knew it was there. It worked on everything from ground squirrels and grouse (lots of those) to elk (only one of those). Today, I think I would buy the much lighter 329 with the 4? barrel.

hmmm he says back country...when I back country back packing I cut my toothbrush in half and am eating gerbil food everyone is saying....better be as long as yer arm and spit hunks a lead the size of a d-cell battery.... if I'm back country I already got a thing that goes boom and will drop a bull elk in its tracks...nuff fer me...
