LAST EDITED ON Aug-23-18 AT 06:05AM (MST)[p]I was drawn for archery in Unit 34 in New Mexico and have no idea where to even begin looking for deer in this area. I live in Louisiana so I really don't have any opportunity to go down and scout. I get a lot of mixed reviews when I research this and I even contacted a guide in the area for some help. Well all I got from him was you should shoot the first legal buck you see. Any help on where would give me the best chance to see some bucks would be greatly appreciated. Thanks all

LAST EDITED ON Aug-23-18 AT 08:46PM (MST)[p]Hi Greg, give NMG&F a call and talk with the Biologist and Game Wardens in that area.
If they can't put you on the deer no one can.

Just to let you know a lot of the guys/locals on here get frustrated when outsiders NR?s come on this forum as a last ditch effort to find some where to hunt. Your a coon-ass you know what I'm talking about. LOL!

Another piece of advice I can give you is there's a couple of outfitters around that can hook you up with a guide for a couple of days to help get you in an area to do some good. Jim Wells is awesome
He goes by JFWRC his wife is Kelly super nice people. I looked it up and 34 is a unit they hunt for deer in.
They number is :
505-294-7861
The other is San Juan outfitters they have an ad on here in NM guides

Anyway Good Luck

I appreciate it. I will give them a call. I am actually from NM and ended up coming to college in Louisiana. If you never met a Cajun girl you are missing out! But I am going with my father who still lives in New Mexico. He would have gone scouting however my mother was diagnosed with cancer so they really don't have the time and $$ to take extra days away from work. Thanks joe and everyone else. Hoping to see some deer.

First off so sorry to hear about your mother. She will be in our prayers. Are you a resident of LA now? There?s some good eating down there. I have friends that live in LA. When they come up to IL within an afternoon I can talk just like them. LOL! They get a kick out of it because they don't realize they sound like that. They are originally from IL.

Where are you from in NM?
Keep in touch. Would love to see some pictures of your hunt.

Peace
Joe

I appreciate the prayers. Yes I currently live in Lafayette, LA. Definitely have some great food down here. I've been all over the country and there is no place like it. Some of the nicest people you l will ever meet. I used to make fun of the way they talked down here and now I'm sure sound just like them lol. I am originally from Albuquerque, NM. I will post some pics if we get one.

Hi Greg

The advice to kill the first legal buck is well based. You are not going to see many deer. I've hunted that unit extensively for elk for the last 20 years and have seen a few decent bucks. If I were going to hunt a deer there, I'd hunt Buck Canyon, Pinon Draw, Avis areas
