So I'm from Georgia and I want to start expanding my horizons out west. My best friend since first grade (I'm 42 now) lives in Denver and we're trying to plan a 2019 western hunt. Since he's resident we are debating trying to get mule deer in Colorado. I know whitetail, turkey, and hog hunting but western hunting is a new adventure.

What areas should we focus on for 2019? I need to make sure that we can get tags, have access to decent areas, and allow us the potential to see some animals. I'm an archery guy but my buddy would be using a rifle so I would assume we'd have to do a rifle hunt and I would choose to bow hunt or rifle hunt. I hate being a newbie but I figured i'd come on here and ask.

Thanks!

LAST EDITED ON Oct-17-18 AT 10:53PM (MST)[p]There are many over the counter opportunities for elk in CO, as well as relatively easy units to draw for elk or deer if you just want to get out and try it. As an archery guy, maybe you should twist your buddies arm about giving an OTC bowhunt for elk a try. There are elk in all the National Forests and a bit of research will point you to a spot that interests you both. No better time to be out and about in CO, catch some bugling, and camping weather can be glorious. Or if you want a good entry level start to hunting the west with a rifle, go after antelope in WY.

Welcome, Good luck and enjoy the hunts!

I'm possibly going to go the route of archery elk. Actually my first plan (or second plan) is to Wyoming Antelope hunt. I'm working with another guy right now from my office to put that trip together.

LAST EDITED ON Oct-18-18 AT 09:32AM (MST)[p]Since he is a resident, I bet there is an area that he can draw a muzzleloader elk tag and you can either draw or buy an OTC archery elk tag for the same unit for the same time...2nd week of September. That or he could draw a muzzle deer or you could get an archery draw deer tag in the same area. Of those 4 possible tags, if you each got one he could hunt with a gun and you a bow during the 2nd week of September. You have to decide if you want to hunt high elevation or not....
