LAST EDITED ON Jan-31-19 AT 02:58PM (MST)[p]I had success in the Colorado 4th season. I'm privileged to be a Colorado resident and big game hunter. I used 16 points on my 2018 tag. Although I could have drawn earlier, I waited because of drought and winter kill. So glad I waited. With my buddies Steve and Greg, I was able to take my deer opening day. We have hunted together and shared eachother's hunts for 47 years. Another Great memory!

Sure is a great buck. I'll bet it was sure fun walking up on that heavy stud buck. Is that your best buck ever?

By far. By having 16 points, you can see I don't deer hunt very often. I'm a dedicated elk hunter. By elk hunting the different seasons, we have a good idea of how the deer are doing.

That's awesome. Great deer and great time with a buddy. Can't beat it.

Congratulations!
That's a really good buck . It's good you were able to do the hunt with your buddies.
There are a lot of us hunters who have also been waiting a long time for a good Colorado deer tag. Do you mind telling a bit about your hunt and possibly the unit you got him in?
Thanks for sharing

Can you tell us what unit? I understand if you'd rather not say.

Did you pass on a bunch of bucks prior to taking this one?

All I can tell you is Gunnison. If I said more my hunting buddies would have to kill me. On opening morning, there was fresh snow. If we saw one track, we saw a thousand. No exaggeration. We saw loads of elk and deer. The deer I killed was the largest we saw that day. When we saw it, it was a no brainer to shoot and not miss. Don't wait, NOW! Over the years, we have learned to protect our hunting spots. Like other hunters, we have names for our spots; like poop de'ville, vapor lock, screamer meadow, and of course the honeyhole. We won't even hunt the honeyhole if we think it will be discovered.
It's amazing what you learn chasing elk in the rut for well over 40 years.

Being from Montana I love seeing these big Colorado deer. Fun to actually see a mature mule deer. Beautiful buck.

That's a dandy! I agree there is just something about a big old mature muley. Wish there were a few more around. Awesome.

Great Buck and congratulations - it nice to see a good buck from that area. I have been waiting along time for a Colorado deer hunt. I feel the time is coming to draw.

Good to see some good bucks still floating around the basin and you made good on your points. Congrats.

Congratulations on a really great looking buck! Those pictures are great, too! Glad you had such good success & thanks for sharing.

That's not a bad way to discard of16 points if you ask me. That buck had to have looked amazing on the hoof!! Absolute no brainer buck. Congrats

Sit tall in the saddle, hold your head up high, keep your eyes fixed to where the trail meets the sky...

Great job and to harvest a trophy like that...surrounded by your dear friends...Priceless !!!
Plan to burn my 16 points this year and would be super pleased with your results...Hat Off

Congrats to you on a great Buck! Congrats to your friends also for being able to share the hunt with you. It makes memories and strengths your friendships.
