I hope the title helps get some participation...

What is the biggest 5 point bull you've ever seen on the hoof or on the ground?

Several years ago when there was a 5 point restriction we found a 360 class 5x5 that we nicknamed "barely". We chased him for 4 days before he finally disappeared & never let an arrow fly. My hunting partner had him at 40 yards in the oak brush & never had a shot either. We should have nicknamed him "a$$hole", or "Lucky" because he always had brush or cows blocking his vitals. He was also the widest bull I've ever seen and he had the longest 3rds I've ever seen. Awesome bull that still haunts me to this day!

Is it September yet?

Cool story. I assume this bull was missing his G5's?

The biggest bulls I've ever seen in the wild were clean 6x6's. Never seen a 5x5 any where near that big, or any monster non-typicals for that matter.

LAST EDITED ON Jan-24-11 AT 09:29PM (MST)[p]yeah Gambler gotta love them monster 5's!

biggest one i've seen live was right at about 340 or so...was actually a 6x8, had about a 2 inch 5th on his left and a cluster of 3 little projections that couldn't really be called points where the right 5th would be...he also had devil points on his fronts, so i guess he wasn't really a 5x at all! but i always considered him one, anyway

had a hunter one time that just had to spit out the phrase "six-by-six" at any and every opportunity...after 2 days of "6 by this, 6 by that", i was kinda sick of it and asked him "if a 5x and a 6x measure the exact same number of inches, which is the bigger bull??"...dude gets all proud on his pony and blurts out "OBVIOUSLY the six-by-six, it has more points!!" :)

pretty sure b&c has 1 fiver in the all time books

I love big 5x5s. Kinda' neat to see them on the hoof and you gotta' love those big whale tails. I think Paul had pics of a big one on a trail cam in '09. I've knocked a couple of big 5x5s down but none in the 340 to 360 class. Takes a hell of a huge 5x5 to score that high.

Three years ago, I found these:

The left side scores 142 4/8. The next spring I found this 171 4/8 in the same area:

Pretty sure they're all from the same bull:

I went back at the end of that summer looking for the match, but a forest fire had pretty much burned the area to a crisp. Never was able to make back there last spring to see if he's still around...

Kind of odd that his sword is the least impressive...

LAST EDITED ON Jan-25-11 AT 08:16PM (MST)[p]i guess the b&c bull i was talkin about was actually a 5x6...which, for official purposes, that 5th on the one side obviously don't count

378 6/8 net

now that is a hammer 5

mozey, you find some incredible sheds...nice work man!

but my favorite are still that monster muley's matched pair

Here's a 5x5 I harvested in '09 (re-post) which is my biggest 5x5 to date. I did find one of his sheds that spring less than a mile from where I ended up shooting him which was pretty cool. I shot an old regress 5x5 bull back home in Colorado as a kid that I will try to scan some photos of. That old bull will likely be the oldest bull I will ever shoot....

Let's see some more pics of good 5x5s.

Nice bull, Cody, and thanks greatwestern for the kind words.

The October after the fire I was actually muzzleloader hunting for this bull when I found a third set of charred sheds that were probably from the same bull the year between the first set above and the single brown one. They were so charred that I left them hanging in tree thinking I'd go pick them up later, but work has been such that I never been back. Still have the waypoint marked on my GPS.

Not having seen any fresh sign of him, I figured if this bull was still alive then the fire must have pushed him into a new area. But last April one of my buddies actually saw this beast and he was still packin. My buddy hadn't seen these sheds before but was in the same general area and he described it as the freakiest looking bull he'd ever seen.

So Miguel, maybe you and I need to plan another trip in there and see if we can add to legend... ;-)

Biggest 5x5 I've ever saw, one was a bull that my hunter shot with a muzzleloader at 202yds, this bull scored in at 322".
Saw another bull that was a main frame 5x5 with split main beams that score 358", this bull was shot in the same unit here in NM
Saw another in Trophy Hunter mag. that was killed in Utah that was in the 370's about 5 or 6 years ago

Impressive!! The long front 3 points kind of detracts from length of the main beam. That is most defintiely a toad of a bull.

I'm glad to see that I'm not the only one who love's a big 5x5!

There are some great representations in this post!

Cody, finally found it.

This is the 5x5 that got me fired up. Would love to kill a bull like that.

Hey any big 4x4s out there?? :)

Hey Cody! Same gene pull..maybe? If you look at the drop in the front and the main frame. That is if you got you bull in 21 cuz I got mine across the road in 17. Just a thought as I looked at yours.

Here is my 5x5 from this year. 330 gross...

I am still waiting to hear the age, but I am guessing he will be the oldest bull I ever take

Paul, that's the bull...I couldn't forget that monster.

Jeff, I think the genetics are definitely there considering the proximity of the kill locations on those bulls! The story you wrote of that hunt (the "Bull Down" story) still sticks in my head and I can't believe I didn't think of the similarity in racks until now.

Moze, seeing that you are a better shed hunter than me makes me jealous....and I don't like it.

Elkhunter96, that is a mondo 5x5, what's the story behind that bull and do you have any field shots? Great bull man...

I agree with greatwestern, keep the pictures coming.

p.s. good post gambler

this has been a great post nice bulls. This is one my we got a few years ago in northern nm. He has about a 2 inch point that makes him a 5x6 but we still call it a 5x5.

I took that bull on the archery hunt in Utah Book Cliffs bitter creek unit. I hunted for close to 12 days before I took him, not to mention all the time scouting. He simply was one of the best bulls I could find this year. I basically chased one really big bull for half the hunt then spent the rest of the days on the unit chasing this guy. I watched him until dark from 500 yars away across the canyon, next morning I went to where I had last seen him. As soon as I set up with a small clearing, I heard him bugle. I gave him a three call sequence, and he came running. He had about 10 cows with him, which he almost pushed right over me. He only stopped to destroy a tree before he came right into bow range. I stopped him with probably the ugliest cow call ever and was able to get a double lung pass through on him. The cows were probably no more than 7 yard from when I shot and he was around 30 yards.

I don't have any pictures really with me and the bull, I happend to be hunting alone the day I took him. Here is one field picture of just him...

1710p1010007.jpg

His whale tips are about 30 inches from the tip of the 4th to the 5th. His teeth were almost gone, waiting to hear back from the DWR on the age. I am guessing 12-14 range...

One appeared in hunting illustrated about 2 years ago. It was a legitimate 5x5 that was killed in nevada out of a blind while the guys 8 year old daughter watched. He gross scored in the mid 380's and netted around 372 I believe. Not sure on the exact net but he was huge.

Then there was a 5x5 killed in Utah last year. I'm not saying anything more than he scored in the 370's and had well over 70 inches of mass. 26" swords and all his tines were way over 20"!

I saw a picture of one off the Cache unit in Utah this year as well. It scored in the 350s. It was a big, heavy bull. Big whale tailed 5s are still pretty cool.
