Heres a photo of this youngsters first elk, not a 400 inch bull, not even a bull but in my book (the one that counts) it is a true trophy, he made a 3.5 mile hike in through some pretty ugly stuff (thats after getting up at 4 am and delivering his paper route..) and made a text book 150 yard shot through the heart and dropped her in her tracks. His mother, my girlfriend, pictured with him in the second photo connected on her first elk on thursday and I didnt have the camera with, stupid me!!! Now the pressure is on me to fill my elk tag and I dont even care if I do, getting the both of them their first elk has made my season. Not to mention has filled the freezer.

Awesome!! The first is always the best trophy no matter the size. That's cool that you got to be there for both their firsts, those memories will last forever.

Thanks for the responses guys, neither of them were hunters before they met me, but after being arond me for a few years and being exposed to my hunting experiences and eating of wild game they both decided that it was something they wanted to do. Another positive experience my girlfriend had: while waiting for her son and I to make the trip back to the pick-up with his elk (it took much longer than anticipated) she met two other hunters (man and wife) and they re-assured her that her son and I would be back soon and they even lent her a cell phone to ease her mind if things got worse, told her to just drop it off when we got back to town, she had no clue who they were nor them us. Then they asked if we had any spare rope and by luck I had just bought two 100 ft coils and she gave them one. I think alot was learned about hunting and hunters in a few short days.

There is no doubt that this is better than a 400 bull! The posts with kids always get to me. Kudos to you for getting them involved in the sport!

That boy looks as proud as can be!

Definitely a trophy. Sounds like a great experience, congratulations. This also deserves a thank you for introducing 2 people to hunting, and giving them a wonderful opportunity. Congrats again.

That's what I love to see. I can't wait to take my girls on their first hent. I'll have to wait a while though. (2 and 41/2) Although my oldest girl swears she can go next year.. ha ha

Thanks for all the kind words guys, keep them coming, the new hunters are following this post as well. Next year my son gets his chance as he will be 12 for the fall hunt.

GREAT JOB! Congrats to the two hunters. I am very envious. In case you two were wondering just how big a feat it is that you have done, I can show you a drawer in my dresser that has 15 elk tags in it. Each one still attached, not a drop of blood in sight. Add it up and it comes to about $800. Don't let everyone on this website fool you with their tales that now is the "good old days of Elk hunting". It's all a bunch of crap. You have got quite a rare animal in my book, - I've been trying for 15 yrs, and you guys did it twice in a week. Quite a feat indeed. Congrats again, and thanks for posting a pic, now I know what an Elk looks like :)

Well, we fed that kid his tenderloins last night. Funny thing was how much better he thought they tasted this year than the ones he ate of my elk last year? I guess now he has the true appreciation of what it takes to get the food on the table.

Steelie,

I feel for you man, it sucks going unsuccessful on elk hunting trips. Where have you been hunting for the past 15 years, same area over and over or? Look me up and Ill put you on an elk next year.

Hey Kid,

Thats great!!! Congrats to the two on this elk, that for sure is a whole lot better than any trophy out there. I'm glad that the whole experience was something that shows what true sportsman are really like. Alot goes out to you for showing/bringing these two fine people into the ranks of sportsman/women. They could not have a better mentor than you. Congrats again to all of you.

I would echo all the positive posts you have received to date. I think it is really good of you to take your girfiend's son along on such a hunt. Of course you did not have to . My mother and father were divorced when I was 8 and my mom and sisters moved from the east coast to Az. It was my neighbor, who had no obligation to so, that got me into hunting. He even signed me up for hunter safety course, and took me to all the classes, so I could go on my first deer hunt when I was 12. He reamins a person that I am forever indebted to. So yes I think you will forever be a special person to your girlfriend's son. Good Job!!!

LAST EDITED ON Oct-14-03 AT 07:45PM (MST)[p]That is what it is all about! The look of pride on a kids face at his or her first big critter! I cant wait until I get to see that look on my girls faces! I take them coyote and grouse hunting, but I dream of the day that they get their first deer and or elk!!!!! Getting both of them their first elk is an extra bonus. I wish that my wife liked to hunt. I took her once and scared her away from it for good.

Good job! It dont get any better than that!

Kid, yeah it does suck coming home empty for such a long streak. Locale is not my problem, plenty of elk where I hunt. I've been mostly archery hunting for elk, which means either sex here in Utah. But I won't take a cow that has a calf (one of my very few personal convictions) and I mostly hunt spike-only units, so I have really limited myself on the # of animals that are fair game. That being said, I have had oppurtunities. This is where my real problem comes in - I get a bit goofy when there is an elk in front of me. I'm not talking about a little case of buck fever or the jitters, more like motor function problems. My hunting buddies find it quite amusing. I haven't started my hunt yet this year, going to try with the muzz this time, hopefully I won't be adding another tag to that drawer. If I do go empty again, I think I will get a cow tag next year and actually get out and hunt them (never had a cow tag, but when I get a doe tag I just drive around in the truck drinking coffee until I can find something close to the road), I gotta do something to get this monkey off my back!

LAST EDITED ON Oct-14-03 AT 09:16PM (MST)[p]Polarbear,

You have no idea how lucky I know that I am that both my girlfriend and her son have taken such an interest in hunting. She had a close call on her elk that could have turned into a bad situation, she made a perfect shot from about 100 yds but the elk rocked back half a step at the shot and only broke its shoulder, one inch further back and it would have been lights out on the spot. Now I had the daunting task of tracking the animal as I knew she wouldnt be able to do it alone but all along the way (1.5 miles) I kept showing her the signs I was seeing that was leading us to where we believed she had gone, finally it looked as if she split off from the herd she was with and then out of the cedars the elk walked about 250-300 yards from us. One clean shot from there ended it, I was so thankful it turned out for the positive as she would have probably thrown in the towel on hunting knowing she had injured an animal and not recovered it.

Steelie,

Hang with it buddy, you'll fill that tag one of these years and it will be the sweetest moment for you!

Congrats DK, That really shows some class to introduce hopefully two more hunters to our world. They should both be very proud!(you too).

PS

Was this a draw unit or were the elk pushed into the cedars because of hunting pressure???

Perseverence pays! When the spirit is right everything clicks. Glad to hear of your success.

Congratulations!
I love seeing pictures and hearing hunting tales such as this.
Brings back memories of my younger years.
Thanks for sharing.
Jerry

Thanks again everybody, its great to see (hear) the encouragement from all of you.

YH,

It was a draw unit. The cedars and sage are their home ground here.
