We were hunting in northern Utah near vernal and some one paid us $200 to pack their elk out. My question to you is- how much you would pay to get your elk out? Or has any one paid you to pack out their elk?

I couldnt accept money in good faith to aid another hunter. I would only ask that he/she pass the favor along to another hunter when they needed the help. And yes, I have helped pack out many elk that took away from my hunt time.

I agree with the following post,a friend in need is a friend in deed.I packed out my elk in 9 hours and it was worth every step.I couldnt move the next day but oh well. Two hundred dollare is like a thousand to me.

Since we use use horses alot, we are always getting asked, most of the time I do it for nothing, but once in a while I get a little extra if they are persistant that I take the cash, but all in all I enjoy helping other hunters out with stuff like that. We got offered up tp 1500.00 to pull out a couple of cows that were shot almost simultaneously by a couple of MD'S that were hunting here in AZ last year, so I guess that what ever it is worth to one may not be to another.........

my dad and i and even my grandpa have helped many a hunter gut even load their elk into the back of the truck. 2 years ago we were doing a juniors elk hunt while there was also a juniors deer hunt. we were seeing more deer than elk and we told 2 different pople where some bucks were and less than five minutes we would hear gun shots knowing that those people just shot their deer

I haul them out for free. Just like the others have said, I may need help someday. Several years ago one of my hunting buddies shot a dandy 7x7 Roosevelt about 6 miles from the nearest road. It was early archery season and the daytime temps were in the 80s. His brother, who was hunting with him, hiked out while my friend took care of the elk. His brother went to where they were logging by helicopter and payed the pilot 100 bucks to haul the elk out. What a sweet deal. That pilot set the elk in the back of his rig. He said that it was the best 100 bucks that he had ever spent.

In Idaho we had a guy offer to take our elk out about 3 miles for half the meat. Ticked me off so we started packing! But after three trips I was thinking it wasn't such a bad deal. I've also had guys offer to take them out for free and I always accept but insist on paying them $100 for thier effort. It's only fair and like polarbear said it's money well spent!

I Love Vernal.
The Green River.
HUGE Mountains. Just gorgeous. 200 bucks to pack out his elk... Depends on how big it was.

If I had horses or even an atv I would never ask or accept money to help out a fellow hunter...It would be a pleasure to help..If the guy wouldn't take "NO" for an answer then I would consider a very minor sum.....Some people just like to feel they paid there way. They don't want to be beholden to anybody and I would respect that....

Depends on how much money I had at the moment. I have enough friends with horses that I probably would never have to pay for it but if i did it would depend on how broke I was already.

Man... I don't know. Like many of you, I have packed out several animals for guys just 'cause I wanted to help and had the time. BUT... and this is a key BUT... if I am back in the wilderness several miles, in the middle of my hunt, I'm not going to drop everything (and cut days off my hunt) to help someone who obviously is not prepared! I would rather help them debone the meat, help them hang what they can't get out in the first trip, and wish them well. It is a hard lesson, but we all have to learn it... AN ELK IS A BIG ANIMAL AND YOU BETTER KNOW HOW YOU ARE GOING TO GET IT OUT OF THERE BEFORE YOU PULL THE TRIGGER!!!! I have never taken $$... but I have said NO! :)

Theodore Roosevelt once said, "The nation behaves well if it treats the natural resources as assets which it must turn over to the next generation, INCREASED and NOT IMPAIRED in value."

DITTO ON THE GRIZ !!!! DO YOUR HOMEWORK AND GO PREPARED !@!@!

I've never accepted money for helping another hunter. Now that I'm disabled, I'd hope someone would do the same for me. I couldn't afford to pay anyway.

We help out fellow hunters any way we can. I do not recall ever taking someones elk out for them, but we have drug a few muleys out for some guys. I guess it depends on the setuation. If I were hunting with an outfitter out of state, for sure, thats his job. But right here at home, I think I have anough people in camp to help out.

$200 is fine to accept, and half the meat is not bad IMO. I would try to give someone at least $50 if they refused then offer meat. It is a lot of work, and I would help someone out with one trip, but more then 3 or 4 hours cuts into my time. Assuming they are not really in a bind and meat might spoil. I have barely enough vacation time to hunt and missing a large chunk of that (ie a full day) is simply to much for me. I would help someone out midday until it was 3-4 hours before dark. And midday whenever needed after that.

I had someone offer to ATV in to my elk (within 1/2 mile) then help me get it the 1.2 mile to the ATV and drive us out. They asked for $50 for beer $$ and I was more then happy to agree, saying I would get them $50, and the beer and bring some elk over to eat too. However, upon looking into it, we were not allowed to take ATV's on the closed road so I was on my own. 8 guys and no one voluntered to help so I did it alone. Funny though, they loved to walk in part way with me (on the way in to pack meat out) and ask where I was hunting etc., but they never helped.

Here in the Wyo, it is illegal to offer unprocessed meat to anyone who is not a relative. However, that would not stop me.

i have not and will not charge someone money or meat to help them get their animal out. i have helped backpack animals out of some nasty country, too. but, i have been helped for no charge in the past and enjoy returning the favor no matter who it is i'm helping. if someone offers to help me, but wants money or meat in exchange, i do it myself.

a couple seasons ago when i shot a really nice muley buck, a couple of other hunters hiked up to where i was. they said they were on the trail of the buck but hadn't gotten a shot opportunity. they offered to help me. they held legs aside while i was field dressing and caping it. i thanked them and on top of all that they each packed a hind quarter out 3 miles and left them at my car so i wouldn't have to make a second trip in to get the rest of the meat. this is the attitude that helps strengthen the hunter-hunter relationship in a sport that gets more competitive every day.

Helping someone out is all the fun of the sport. If it is a beginner and they are not ready for the chore what happens. Most of them get overwhelmed and leave meat to spoil. I will help out any time no matter what. I like packing meat. Its when the fun of hunting starts.
I have been offered money and meat but I refuse no matter what. Just knowing that they will have a memory and tell there family and friends about you is all it takes. I have helped out alot of NR with packing mostly and like I said they will go home more happy with the hunt than be discouraged and not come back. Just means more people to push the elk to me.LOL
