Hunting in Idaho and Michigan???

My employer may be sending me to either Idaho or Michigan (I know, two very different places!)

What is the hunting like in these areas? What type of game is there and how easy/hard to draw tags?... esp for elk?

Thanks!!!

Lots of public land in Idaho.

Lots of private land in Michigan.

I believe no elk or mule deer in Michigan.

You can buy an over the counter tag in some areas for elk other areas you have to draw. Some of the best controlled hunt tags will have odds of less than 1 in 10. You don't get preference points if you didn't draw the year before so a guy putting in for the first time on a hunt has as good as a chance of drawing as a guy that has been putting in for 10 years.

here's a link to the draw odds and regs

Brian, do you hunt Cats and Bears in Idaho too?

What are Preference points, and how do they work?

Thanks man!

ozstriker22,

Go to either of the above mentioned web site or call this number 208-334-3700 and ask the to send you a copy of the 2003-2004 Hunting regulations. Everything you want to know is inside of this booklet and will help you out. There are maps of all the units in state etc.
Forget Michigan if its hunting you are interested in.

Brian

I have never seriously hunted either. If you put in a little work a bear isn't too hard to come by and in most areas it is legal to use bait and hounds. With good hounds a lion is easy to come by but without hounds it is a shot in the dark.
I forgot to mention earlier if you archery hunt you can buy over the counter tags for deer, elk and antelope. If you don't get your deer or elk with your bow you can then hunt the general rifle and then hunt late archery hunts.

Here's a picture of What Hunting Idaho looks like....

Great pics, moosie! What beautiful country. Looks like I'll need to stop eating In-N-Out and start exercising.

Jesse

p.s. thanks again everyone! It's an easy decision... Now, about working in Idaho - I work for AAA as an insurance salesman in San Diego.

How is AAA of Idaho? Do they have good rates? Good reputation? Are there other companies that may be better to work for? (Firm believer in hedging my bets!)

OZ, Don't waste yer time with Idaho.. ALL the Elk are gone!! Wolves ate them all.... Ask Anybody :) the only elk left look like this :

Is_it_bigger_this_way.jpg

The Only AA I know is the Weekly meetings I go to. NO Jobs, and NO ELk, Hell, most of us have to go to the Library 3 hours uphill both ways to use a Computer to check the Internet. Please don't waste your time here. It's a vast land of Snow and hills with only dirt roads !!!!!

Michigan... It's were you want to be !!!!

I actually use a Combo of things.. I mostly use a Video Camera. I have a Cammon Xr25 (Or something like that). It's not even being made any more. But it works AWSOME. Uses the Mini DV's (Digital tape actually, pretty standard with all the digital camcorders) I then Use Pinical Video Editing to Pull stills from the Video. I have more Pictures then I care to post (Or from what people actually want to see... But it's Really fun :)

In All Seriousness, Most of Idaho Is WAY WAY Steep. Here is a few pics of another place I hunt :

Then I took the Digital Camera and Put it on the Swarovski's (8x) and zoomed a bit in on the 2nd picture notice the White animal in there ?~? I know your from California and All so I'll give you a hint that it's not an ELK, Moose or Mule deer :) :

Hunting in Idaho and Michigan??? ( Try iowa !!!!!)

HAHA.. Unlike most People On the net, I'm not afraid to say who I am or where I am from :) Although One time I posted my Address on the Net, Next thing I knew I was Kicking these Jokster around on a board (You know the type, the Better then Everyone else type) Anyways, I have a Tendency to say what I feel... so.....

They thought it would be funny to Send a Gay porn mag subscription to my house. Very funny indeed, I'm sure they got a Chuckle. I know I did. I'm OK with a Practical Joke even at My Expence. That being said, I called the MAg and said that I used the Wrong credit card and Gave them my Address. They in return Gave me the Credit card to Verify.. Even the Experation date.

So.. here I was, A couple of Montana Sheep Fuggers playing a Practical Joke on me... I now had their Info too, and their card to use at my descresion :) I did some Quick internet work, got the name of the Card holder and his # and address. I then, In return, Used his Credit card to Order Some Gay porn Devices, (You know the Ones, The pink butt plugs, the string with all the Little balls on it....Ect. ) Well, to make a long story short I send that stuff back to them... but, I actually used there name and all there neighbors Address's. (Is it coming together yet ?~?~)

I can just imagine when Neighbor Frank got the Pink plug and Brought it next door to Mr "X" saying.... "Uhhhhh.. Morning Mr "X", I think I recieved something of yours in my Mailbox yesterday.... Uhhhhh Hows hunting been going.... ?"

Buuuahahaha !!! Not only to one neighbor.. but to both ones and a few accross the street.

Anyways... Nuf about me being funny and Paying people BAck :) I'm in NAmpa, Just outside of Boise. I hunt the Sawtooth area. Feathervill is a nice area but has WAY too many people drive around there ;)

Waterfowl ?!?! Come on man.. why wait... find the Post in the General forum (Open Forum) on Waterfouling and share some Pictures.. it looks like I'm the only one that shoots Waterfoul on this board....

Sorry I don't get down to these sections much.. I'm usually up Playing Funnies in the Open Forum. *WINK*

I missed were ya live. If you're in the Boise Area (And this goes to Any/all other local posters here) drop me a line sometime. We'll do lunch or have a beer over dinner or something and swap a few lies !!!

RE: Hunting in Idaho and Michigan??? ( Try iowa !!!!!)

Oh, man that is some pretty ruff country in those pictures. You definately work for your elk. I'm from Burley, all my brothers live in Boise though. We knock the chit out of the geese and ducks down here. As soon as Brian up loads my pictures, I'll post them in that Waterfowler post, in the open forum. We have been doing awesome on both, we killed 12 geese today. So I'm at 35 geese, and well over 200 ducks. The two pictures I'll post in that waterfowler post, is of two duck shoots this year. One was 28, and the other was 49. But we have awesome waterfowl hunting.

Believe it or not, Michigan actually has an elk season. It's a draw tag for residents only, and they only give out about 150 tags per year, for about 30,000 applicants.

There are tons of whitetail deer in MI, plus black bear, turkey, waterfowl, upland game and birds, and great fishing - salmon, trout, walleye, bass, panfish, pike.

All that being said, I would still choose to live in Idaho for the hunting.
