Last friday was the opener of the Arizona general elk season. The group I was with set up camp about 25 miles in off the nearest paved road. Things where going just as planned until late saturday night around 1:00 a.m. when we were all woken out of sound sleep to people yelling that they where coming into are camp and needed help.

I crawled out the tent as did others and there stood 2 adult males about 25-30 years old and one of the guys 5 year old son. When we inquired as to the problem, they told us there truck had broken down and needed a ride back to there house. They told us it was a about 5 miles to there place once we hit the paved road or about a 3 hour round trip. When asked what they where doing out this late they replied joy riding and drinking beer. Thankfully one of the guys that had killed offered to take them out, he left at 1:30 and returned around 4:30 a.m.

The next afternoon we where talking about what had happened,
all people in camp said they would have droven them out because they had a kid with. I then made the comment that had the kid not been with them I would have give them all the supplies they needed to survive the nite and let them hitch it out the next day. One of the guys in the group said he would have taken them out anyway. What would have you done ?

i would have taken them to the police station, then child protective services.

I would have shot and buried the adult males and sold the five year old to the Indians............Actually that's the kind of thing we are all fearful of when strangers enter our camps in the middle of the night.

My remote camps, like I'm sure all of yours are always well armed. Once they were in camp and asking for help I would have directly asked them if they were up to no good and if they were clothed in a way that looked suspiciously like they were hiding weapons I would have asked them to show me if they were armed. I would not disarm them, just let them know that I am not a good victim for them. At least 2 of you should have given them the ride.

If possible, when approached by strangers in these situations, at least 1 of your party should stay concealed and observe the situation until everyone is comfortable.

I have had to ask for help in the middle of the night before and it's not pleasant.

Never let your guard down,

I would have given them a ride. Yes, they were stupid, but so have I been many a time. Maybe not THAT stupid, especially with my kid, but stupid none the less.

venor, ergo sum (I hunt, therefore I am)

I would have to give them a ride also, only because my wife says I've done some really stupid things too. (which i can't remember of course) Gary

Well, Stupid ain't a crime so I would of given them the ride. I do think that two of you should have took them back for safety reasons, not only getting them there but for the return trip also.

About 20 years ago(young and foolsih) I was archery elk hunting and got really turned around(lost)just as I came upon a large group of elk with a big bull elk. Well I kept on the bull until dark, never getting a shot. Now I had jto come up with a game plan. It was not getting down to freezing at night so even if I ended up spending the night out there I knew I would be okay, just would have a long night. I decided I would walk until I hit a road and then walk along the road until I came upon a camp. I figured that would be better than sitting around until morning light. If I got tired I would just sleep next to the road and if anyone came along I could get help.

Well sure enough I found a road and kept walking along. After and hour or so I heard a strange sound and as I kept walking the sound became louder until I realized it was music from a radio. Out in the woods at night you can hear sound from a long ways off.It took me another 30 or so minutes to reach the camp where the radio was playing. It was around 10 p.m. and the 2 hunters got out their map and we figured out where I was supposed to be and where I was actually at. I figured these guys would offer to give me a ride back to my jeep but instead they made sure I knew where I was, what route I would have to take to get back to my jeep, and sent me on my way. I figured it would have taken them 30 minutes to drive me to my jeep(I had really got off course). I did not get back to my camp until 2 in the morning. I have always thought they should have given me a ride and have always told myself that if anyone ever came into my camp in a similar situation I would gladly give them a ride.
