South Slope East Yellowstone late cow hunt

TAGCHASER

I thought I would make a post and see if anyone in monstermuley land knows the unit. My father and his friend drew this tag as last choice. We have never hunted it. Looking at the elavation it apears most of the unit is 9000-1100 feet. That has me wondering if we will even be able to find any elk on the mountain this late in the year. Is there anyone out there that could lend some advice on where to look. I am very good at glassing to find them and plan to spend a lot of time doing so. However it would be awsome to hear from someone who has hunted this unit on where we should start. Thank you in advance for your help!

TAGCHASER, i have the same tag also same boat as you are in never hunted the area before got coned into getting the tag now that person is backing out on me so mabye we can both go after the big cows my hunt starts the 29 of november and goes til the 31 of december how about yours?

Depending on the snow, a lot of the elk will be moved onto indian land. Best chance will be on the South slopes near the border of the Forest service and the Indian lands.

Good Luck

Go up to the Yellowstone Campground right north of the indian reservation on the Yellowstone river. Then turn up the nasty hill and out toward Dry Creek/Gultch (20 miles east). Dry Creek is on the west side of where the indian res. goes up into the the national forest the furthest.

There are sparce ponderosa pines, meadow and quakies all along the shelf above the indian reservation. There are also a ton of ATV trails you can use down low right on the boarder.

I would call the Forest service and see if those roads are still passible right now. The hill up out of the Yellowstone drainage is a steep bugger. You can come in from the Uinta River side as well. That road is much easier, but a rocky bumpy ride.

If the roads aren't open, the elk will be down on the indian reservation and I don't know what you'd do then.

Cheers,
Pete

What about the other end of the boundries up by flaminggorge and the matt warner resevour? is that are any good for the elk to winter and can it be aaccessible by truck?

I Think the area you are talking about is just a little too far west of the boundry. The uinta river is our western boundry and the drainage divide between the whiterocks and dry fork rivers is the eastern boundry. Up by paridise park reservoir. There doesn't seem to be much huntable ground in this unit that is not indian reservation. I Guess we will just hunt right north of the reservation. Up by whiterocks camp ground. Thanks very much for the responses. Anyone else know any thing about this hunt. We will be headed out this weekend for the hunt. Thanks again.

I have a buddy that hunts elk on that side of the Uinta. He hunts right on the lower edge of the sage and quakies. I think it is called Pole Creek Mtn. above there. He's out of the country on business for a couple of weeks so, I can't get any more info for you right now.

I think the terrain is similar there to where I was describing. Sparce pine, sage and some quakie patches right above the reservation.

Hopefully you'll get into them.

Cheers,
Pete
