This is unreal guys, Im reading my new eastmans and they smoked this bull dubbed "goofy" last season outa Utah. He went from roughly a 330-340 bull in 2001 to a 439 3/8 in 2002! It's UNREAL! Every single point put on at least 5 inches in length and he went from literally no 5th on his left side to a 17" 5th! His beams went from 42 to 48! This bull is Unreal, It is the largest gross scoring bull in Utah History. Check it out if ya guys wanna. I'll scan the cover later today, this bull is unreal.

So that is how your stories get so big. They are exaggerated 100 times from the truth.

Yeah I read the same article... That bull is a slug for sure, too bad that his thirds are goofed up and he has just a nubbin on the other side for a fifth... B&C scoring just won't do that bull justice!

Read my eastmans too. Cass is right.....that bull is a hog. I would have liked to see him in '02 when he was a 6X6. He's got tremendous tine length for sure. I agree that B&C would screw this bull for lack of symetry. I like to hear gross score.

Thats a picture of the Shipley bull. It came outa AZ. From what I understand, B&C won't recognize this bull because of some controversy. It is definately a hog.

I thought bulls in the wild only put on 20-25" of growth a year( Wildlife Bio report) 100" is sure a lot must have found the right stuff that year.

Here's a short portion of an article I wrote about the Shipsey bull in 1998. -TONY

How big is it?

First, lets look at some of the top bulls to put Shipsey?s in perspective.

The Ninth Edition of the SCI Record Book, published in January 1998, shows the largest Rocky Mountain typical elk as a 6x6 bull killed in 1993 by Jean Luc Mendler near Trinidad, Colorado. It scored 407-6/8. The book lists a 7x8, killed in the White Mountains of Arizona in 1995 by Hyland Erikson, as the number one non-typical elk. Total score -- an impressive 415 points.
B&C still lists the 7X8, John Plute bull, taken in 1899 from Dark Canyon, Colorado as it's typical world-record. It scored 442 3/8 points and is on display in a tiny hardware store/gas station in downtown Crested Butte, Colorado. The main spread was 45 4/8, and the right and left main beams measured 55 5/8 and 59 5/8 respectively. The second largest typical, scoring 441 6/8, hangs in the Jackson Hole Museum. No one knows who killed this 7X8 bull, however.

Jumping up to the more modern records of bulls killed this century reveals no surprise; it's a stunning 7X7 trophy from Arizona?s Gila County -- or more accurately, from the San Carlos Apache Reservation. Killed by James C. Littleton in 1985, this elk scored 421 4/8 points, ranking it #3 in the B&C listings as of the 1995 update. The inside spread was 39 inches, and the main beams measured 55 4/8 and 58 2/8.

The CURRENT (emphasized!) B&C world-record non-typical, shot by James R. Berry in 1961, grew up near Gilbert Plains, Manitoba. The 9x9 antlers totaled 447-1/8 and had a spread measurement of 39 7/8 inches. The right beam was 54 1/8 and the left was 52 5/8.
Now here?s the scoop on Shipsey?s pending, non-typical world-record.

The inside spread between the main beams was 42 inches, and the right and left main beams measured 61 1/8 and 56 4/8. The gross score was an astounding 502 6/8. After the 15 6/8 in differences were subtracted, the overall score came to an incredible 487 points -- more than yardstick bigger than the above current listed record! And if this bull had been scored as a typical, it still would have added up to an impressive 418 6/8 points.

There is a repica of this bull in the Sportsman's here in Phx. The tag under it says SCI 500 2/8 or 6/8... anyway it is a beautiful bull... I talked to the taxidermist @ the Trappers Den in Pinetop 2 years ago when he was doing the replica or a replica and he said that the head of B&C and Shipsey do not get along and the contoversy over steriods being found were BS... but that B&C would probably never recoginze the bull... to bad

The postal service is terible, I just got mine today. I always get my MuleyCrazy about 2 weeks after everyone else.

I heard it wasn't recognized by B.C. because the way he hunted it or the fair chase rule. I don't think it would something petty like the pres. doesn't like him. It would have to be something serious and substantiated for them to throw it out. Does anybody know the real story?

After seeing this I went out an bought this mag. After reading this story I was majorly pissed. This guy has hunted the same unit for three years in a row. How does this guy keep getting tags in a limited entry unit? Is he buying them at the RMEF sale?

It just burns me up that we all have to keep putting in each year for LE tags that are in essence a once in a lifetime hunt and this guy gets to come each year and hunt the sam unit.

Hey Hondo,

That's life, quit crying. Or go make a bunch of money and outbid him.

JB

Oh yea I forgot. Elk hunting is all about who has the biggest gun and the most money. All of us poor suckers should just give it all up for the doctors and lawyers.

He was buying these tags from a local group of landowners, who receive them for the number of elk they support on their private property. There is one conservation tag on this unit as well. It is being sold by Sportsman for fish and wildlife this year.

Keep in mind guy's that Utah gives out over 300 conservation permits to these special interest groups. The state with the next highest conservation permit total has something like 30. Until we all unite and decide this isn't fair we need to just deal with it. We have a very tough time drawing a tag for elk and yet the wealthy can buy 4 tags a pop every year they wish too. I guess we need to just grin and bear it or "Go make a pile of Money and out bid them". My problem is not with the conservation permits themselves, it is with the sheer number of them in a state where a resident will only draw out twice if lucky. Have a great day.
