Extreme elk tactics seems to be a interesting topic that is surfacing a lot lately...so what do you think.....have you used them to any success???? Or if you have read about them would you use them??? Or just stick with what you are doing?
Some of the things I have read really aren't that new, and some things seem to be trying to reinvent the wheel....your thoughts please.

what are extreme elk tactics? i don't hunt elk like anyone else i know, but i always figgerd i was just goofy, not extreme. but if you wanna kill big bulls, you have to get a little extreme.

RLH, from what I read, most of what they were talking about were different tactics for bowhunting elk, these guys are doing things what they consider different, maybe not to some, but to most like throwing the more traditional methods of things like not calling a whole lot, and saying to actually overcall with cow calls more than bugling. Also some of the things that were stated was to not let up on calling when the bull gets say within 75 yards, and at that point really mix it up with a whole bunch of different calls???
Some other things that they touched up on were not being afraid to make noise when hunting them. They were saying elk are loud too, so when you are calling, why not be loud like a elk??
I don't know, I just thought some of the stuff they brought up was intersting and would see if anyone hunts elk in that fashion or uses those kinds of methods...

I too am a bowhunter.

There's times when the situation calls for bugling bulls in.
There's times when cow calling is best for a particular situation.
There's times when both bugling and cow calling is best for certain situations.
There's times when "Call & Stalk" method works with either bugling or cow calls to keep non advancing bulls vocal.
There's times to hunt wallows to be the most effective.

Then there's times to use "extreme tactics" when necessary,
and by all means, make plenty of noise under many of these situations. NOT under "call & stalk" though. elknut1

before my knees gave out, i was a heck of an elk bowhunter. my main tactic was to run. chase em down. get in the middle of the herd and then try to call one in or maybe even let one walk by. last bull i shot with a bow was so close that when he was whistlin', snot was landing on my face. after i stuck him he stepped on my buddy, who was laying on the ground a few feet away, as he ran off. i'd start following them about 2 or 3 in the morning. in Az. they're usually out in the open that time o' day and you can see em pretty good with binoculars. lay low and see where they are gonna go and follow em. dang i miss bowhunting. now i try to get late bull tags and go into the middle o' nowhere with my old hardcase horse.

I would put that under the "Extreme" category. I've done and been in the spot before, and it's truly awesome and things can happen fast. At least for 30sec-to a minute you're one of them.

In AZ we hunt water alot so I like to put detergent in all the tanks around the tank I'm hunting, so the bulls will only come to my water.Another good extreme tatic is using a cordless spotlight in the meadows at night, this works particulary well in the archery hunt. But the old fasion way of driving and spotlighting with the hunter in the back of the truck is stil probably the best extreme tatic I know of!
