Muzzleloader loads for elk?????

I am getting this years hunt together and deciding on archery or muzzleloader for elk in Colorado. I know Colorado you can't use Pyrodex Pellets in your inline, but what about sites and bullets. I currently shoot the Encore 50 caliber for whitetail in Ohio. I use 100 grains of pellets and 245 grain Powerbelt bullets. What do I need need to step up to for elk and deer if I get drawn? I was thinking at least 300 grain bullet but should I step up to 150 grains of powder or something in between 100 and 150. I know I have to switch from pellets to powders but is there any burn factors between the two I should be aware of. Like, is 2 pellets equall to 120 grains of powder or anything like that? What has worked for you hunters with experience.

Thanks, Erik Beckett

I would definately step up the the 348 grain or 405 grain (whichever shoots better). I shoot 110 grains of pyrodex behind the 405, but that is with a 54 caliber. You should start at 90 grains and work up to 150 and see what shoots good out of your gun. Every gun is different. I am probably going to switch to Triple 7 powder this year, and you use less of that than pyrodex, so reduce your dose some if you switch.

Please, please, go for the max load you can handle safely on elk. These animals deserve all you can give them. Personally, in NM, I use 3 pellets with a 250 Barnes X. I know you can't use the pellets in CO. They, elk, absorb energy like no other. A good shot in the vitals will do it, it just takes time, and the blood trails tend to get thin quick if at all. Good luck and come to NM when you want to hunt real elk :)

QUIT SHOOTING THEM SISSY BULLETS AND BUILD YOU A LOAD THAT WILL KNOCK A BULL RIGHT ON HIS TAIL!!!

MY GUN LIKES 90 GRAINS OF FFF TRIPLE SEVEN WITH A 600 GRAIN SLUG SITTING ON IT!!!

THIS LOAD PICKS THEM UP AND SETS THEM DOWN!!!

MY RIFLES DON'T EVEN COMPARE TO THE KNOCKDOWN OF THIS LOAD!!!

THE ONLY bobcat WITH A BLUE SHOULDER!!!

Bobcatbess, only 90 grains of powder pushing a 600 grain bullet! What kind of ballistics do you have with that load. I can't inagine its fast by any means, but probably has some amazing energy, if thats a real load. Do you know the difference in efficiency between powder and pellets, like, 100 grains in pellets in equall to 90 grains of powder?

Thanks, Erik

117 GRAINS TRIPPLE 777 WITH A 385 BUF BULLET.
or the biggest blade and heavy splined arrow.
practice practice practice.
know your range that your comfortable at and stick to it.
good luck.

I am from Ohio and I am going to hunt elk & mulies during muzz. season one year, right now I am building pnts for both.

Do you have any points? What unit are you going? I am very curious, right now my dad and I have a total of 5 pnts (mostly mine) for elk and 1 for deer going into this years draw.

I am very interested in hearing how your hunt goes for my own research.

If you want any info about a NM bowhunt for elk I can help you out.

Also do not foget no scopes in CO and I believe no sabots either, actually come to think of it no inlines too.

Where abouts in Ohio are you from? We are building elk points right now. We hunted in Unit 17 and 181 last year. The ranch is split by the Continental Divide and the two units. We need one preference point for muzzleloader elk and I am not sure on the deer. We may just bow hunt it again this year. We didn't get any last year but we were rookies and I missed at 23 yards. A real nice 5x5 bull. The bulls are there and we had a real learning experience. You can only get better right. Do you bow hunt or just want to muzzleloader hunt? We have room for 2 more people. As far as muzzleloader goes, I know you have to use powder and not pellets and no scopes, but what do you mean no inlines? What constitutes a muzzleloader being an inline? I have a TC Encore and I am not buying a different muzzleloader just to hunt elk. I will use my bow instead. I am definetly interested in NM if you have any info or a place you can recommend. You can email me at [email protected]

Thanks, Erik

I'M USING 3FFF,A NOTCH HOTTER THAN RECOMENDED!!!

LAUGH IF YOU WANT,BUT IF YOU'D SEEN WHAT THIS WEAPON HAS DONE TO DEER IN THE LAST 6 YEARS,YOU GET A LESSON IN INSTANT,QUICK KILLS,IT PICKS THEM UP AND SLAMS THEM DOWN!!!

I HUNTED WITH 7MM MAGS & 300 WIN MAGS FOR 20 YEARS,THIS LOAD DOES MORE DAMAGE THAN EITHER HIGH POWER HAS EVER THOUGHT OF DOING!!!

YOU'VE PROBABLY SEEN HUNTS WHERE THE HUNTER USED A HIGH POWER AND THE BULL JUST KINDA TAKES THE HIT LIKE A MAN AND WALKS OFF???

THEY DON'T WALK OFF WITH THIS LOAD,I'VE MOVED EM BACK,LIFTED EM OFF THE GROUND,BUT ALWAYS THE SAME RESULTS,IT SLAMS THEIR ASS TO THE GROUND INSTANTLY!!!

NOW I'M NOT RECOMENDING THE LOAD,IN FACT I'M TELLING YOU JUST LIKE THE MANUFACTUERS,DON'T USE ANYTHING HOTTER THAN 2FF!!!

THE ONLY bobcat WONDERING:IS THERE SOMEBODY OUT THERE MAKING 4FFFF POWDER YET???
