CO unit 10 archery, need some advice

I think I finally have enough points to draw an archery tag in unit 10, but I'm not sure if I should. In looking at maps, I see very few areas of any size that don't have roads close by and I have been told the elk will beat feet for the national monument if pressured much.

Has anyone hunted this unit or have first hand knowledge about the archery hunting here? What type of bull can I realistically expect to see?

My brother drew that unit this year. We scouted all summer and had a blast. There are a lot of elk in that unit and some dandy bulls.

There are a couple of problems for an archery hunter. A lot of the country is wide open. It is tough to get close to the one you want. We were within 100 yards of two very nice bulls (330-350 range) but couldn't close the distance in the sage brush.

The second issue is private property. We contacted many of the land owners and weren't able to hunt without being willing to pay big bucks which we didn't. There are still good places to hunt but when the pressure comes many of the elk are on private or in the park.

My brother ended up taking a nice 6x6 at 20 yards. (double lung)
The bull will score right around 300. He just got the mount back and its awesome.

We talked to several bow hunters that came away without an elk. We have scouted that unit for about 10 years and know it quite well. You can get a 300+ bull with a bow. Getting one bigger will be a challenge without being a little lucky.

It's a great unit for seeing animals. Shoot me your email address and I will send you some live shots from the summer and fall scouting.
