Co unit 61

Hi all, kind of new to the site, its a great site. What do you think and have any of you hunted unit 61 in the 1st season. I have 9 points and don't want to wait forever for 1,2,10 or 201. I have hunted 43, 54, 55 and 69/84. Any help would be great.

I'm taking it for granted you're talking elk since this is the elk site. A friend of mine had a 3rd season deer tag for 61. He saw dandy bulls everyday just driving around. PC

Well I've never hunted it but two years ago a friend of mine drew for a 2 season bull tag in 61 and got a 320 6x6 and he had shots at another 6 bulls that weren't as big. I would try to contact a guide that hunts in that unit they could give you a lot more info. What was your experience like hunting in 54 and 55? I'm going to be saving up a couple of points to hunt in 69/84 for elk and deer, so any info. on that would be helpful.

Check my post under the Mule Deer section for some photos of Unit 54 from the first rifle season this year. Great country, but be prepared to really have to hike/pack in unless you get some weather to force them down some. We hunted the upper soap creek area around Bonefisk Peak.

I drew a deer archery permit for unit 61 in 2003. Not many deer but saw alot of elk. I have some video of some350 class elk. NOt sure where they go in the rifle hunts but have some places for the archery hunt they were at. Give me a e-mail if you want more info.

I have hunted around unit 55 & 43 for 17 years. Just outside Crested Butte. You can pick just about any area on national forest. There is very little quad tracks, so that isn't a worry. Everything is up from the town so lots of hiking. If you go past the crested butte ski area you'll see a huge Mtn range in front of you, its called the White Mtns. if you put in the 3 hr walk to the base of the range you'll do good. Brush Creek goes up from there to the top. You can also try Copper Creek, Rustlers Gulch, these are all in the same area. Across from the ski area down slate river rd you'll run into Oh Be joyfull Mt, its in the Raggeds Wilderness. There are lots of elk in this whole area. Mostly rag horns and small 5-6 points. the best bulls i have ever seen are in the 325-350 class. if you need more info send a private message. I have hunted 69/84 twice.
