How do you score elk?
Are there any particular things you look for when you see a bull and want to ensure he is big enough to be considered a trophy or good one?

When you see him standing there looking at you or turns his head and has brow tines sticking out over his nose....bust'em--he's a good one.

Both of the above combined with MASS and youre looking at a wall hanger.

Yeah, what they said!

How you score them...

Length of main beam and the other 5 points (or more), the circumference of the main between the 1st and 2nd points, etc....till the circumference between the 4th and 5th points. Add all that up on both horns and add the inside spread of the antlers and you are close enough.

Tine length is the biggest factor, but mass can make a diff!

Go Gettem!

Thanks for the comments.
Since I have never shot an elk. I think I will use the old method. See horn SHOOT HORN.
After that I will be able to score them a little better.
Brow tine past the nose = big elk. Got It.

I've heard to look for a long 4th & a wide whale tail. But who has time to look. Does it have horns? Yep. BOOM.

If you are pulling the trigger and think he is a trophy, then it is a trophy. If you are pulling the trigger and then go look to see if it is a trophy, you are going about it in the wrong way. If there is any question as to whether it is a trophy to you, or not, pass it up and look for better. If you'll be happy with it, Congrats!!!

Really couldn't have said it any better the Antlerrick. A trophy is in the eye of the beholder. Everyone would like to shoot a huge animal. Don't forget that just getting a chance to harvest a big game animal can be rewarding also. Don't get too caught up in scoring.

you will know its him when you see him. deep tops, long beams, points to his nose. when he moves the whole forest go's with him.
you heart pounds and you are so shocked you forget you have your bow in hand.
at least thats how it works for me.
