After several years of unsuccesful applications for limmited elk at the book cliffs, I changed this year, and drew a tag for the La Sal mountains this year. Does anyone know what size bulls they have been harvesting in that unit. Looking forward to trying for a bull in september. Would appreciate any and all helpful information.

tex270,

I hunted with my buddy, his dad, and his uncle last year. They had three of the twelve rifle tags for the unit. All of them took 300 class bulls. I think that they could have gotten bigger, but it was hard to keep them from shooting raghorns. I saw two of the other bulls that came off, one was 300 class and the other was purported to be 340, although I would guess it was more like 330. Throughout the fall I spent quite a bit of time hunting this unit, big bull, spike, and late season cow. I ran onto two different bulls later in the year that I would judge around 350 class. I have heard tell of 370 class bulls on the unit, but I feel that they are not the norm.

I would be glad to help with whatever questions you might have. Just let me know. You will have a good hunt.

Utah450 thanks alot for the info. I had a deer tag last year, and hunted the north side of the mountains, around Taylor Flat. I never seen an elk till the last morning of the hunt, and I believe it was on Pace ranch, but he was a monster. I would guess about 340. I have hunted unit 60 in Colorado, close to Buckeye resvoir the previous 5 or 6 years, managed one 4 point raghorn. I am somewhat familar with the north side of the mountain, but not at all familar with the rest of it. Thanks abunch for your reply to my post.
