I drew for muzzle loader mid nov. Ive never been there, just heard its a really good area. Anyone have any info? I would appriciate it. Thanks in advanced!

I have some info. I mapped that area and also guided my wife on a cow elk hunt in there. Do you have a preference for what kind of country your hunting in? such as. high forests, dessert, plains?.... either way the unit is covered up with elk but i think you can increase your odds of a better bull and see less people if you stay low and scout lil hidey holes away from mt. taylor.

Shedcrazy did your wife tag out? I really dont have a preference for hunting country, I'll go through it if I need to. So what what type of country is out there? And Ya I'll be after a Good Bull. There shouldn't been that many people only 5 tags for my hunt, Unless you had a different experience. Email me about you what you mapped, Like any nice saddles, water holes, bedding areas maybe you found if you dont mind. I'd apriciate it Thanks!

Oh , 5 people only huh. Thats very nice. I have located some very nice bulls (300 or better) on the san mateo mesa side. I would not climb the mesa but rather stay on the bottom and work around it. I wish I had a photo of the 8 bulls runnin in there together. I have had more luck seein game in the low areas rather than the mountain. My wife did not tag out. She was very Ill and we hunted only 2 days. In both days, had it been my tag, we would have filled out. It was only a cow hunt though. I like the unit and it is a easy unit to hunt. lots of access. as the hunt gets closer. Hollar at me at [email protected] and I will try to get you some of the landbase maps that I did for the area and mark the areas of high interest.:)

Dave must not be aware of Marquez. The area he is describing is in the regular unit 9.

Marquez is a georgeous place. However it is pretty small. I used to drive through it when I lived in Abq. and drove up the nasty hill to get to the areas in unit 9 I hunted.

The top side by the Floyd Lee Ranch is usually very good. However, I haven't been there in 10+ years. When I was there, they had way too many cattle on it and the elk stayed mostly on the private.

Is the Access from the East side still open or did that get closed? Either way, its a long nasty drive in there. You should, however have a great hunt.

I hope you meant mid Oct there jj,, Anyways you may find a bull or 2 around 300 but I wouldnt get excited to see anything much bigger... Before they started having the major elk slaughter.... 9 in its entirety was a blast but it is getting harder and harder to find them now... G&F did another great job of whacking elk...Another story about 9 is they are reseeding some parts but grazing is going on soo where are all the elk on private since they dont have any moo moo's... I am going on the mid Oct bull hunt in 9. Good luck...

The rut will be at the tail end if not over, but keep doing alot of calling anyway sometimes they will pipe up for you. Good luck
