Handheld GPS

I am just curious how many of you use a handheld GPS. They seem like they'd be pretty good for saving time getting around the backcountry. If you do use one, what are some of things you like and dont like about it.

I wouldn't go out without mine. If you do a search on this site you will find a few previous posts with a lot of great info to help you decide. That's what I did b-4 I settled on my Garmin Legend. Awesome unit that is menu driven and operates much like windows on a PC.

LAST EDITED ON Dec-11-03 AT 06:06AM (MST)[p]I use a Garmin Etrex Vista. I really like it and used it quite a bit during this past season.

Ebay is the best place to get one for the best deal.

I bought the Magellan Sportrak Pro. I am a flatlander that gets lost easily in the backcountry. I am happy with it and might get the mapping software for it before next year. One note, always carry an extra set or two of batteries, they can suck the juice in a day.

Here's my first post...new member

I use an old Magellan 2000XL with no download capability, maps or anything, but I'll upgrade some day.

Mine has been invaluable, but not for finding my way back to the truck. I use mine to get me way back on public land and make sure I'm not trespassing on private.

I load in corners of public land sections as waypoints and walk way off the road. As long as I stay between the waypoints I'm legal. Without many prominant land marks, fences not even close to section lines and angry land owners, a compass and map alone don't cut it.

More than a few times I've been confronted by guides or landowners trying to kick me off "their" land. I pull out the GPS and map, show them the color of the section and how I got there and tell them its not theirs.

GPSs are great. I use the UTM coordinates to keep it simple, most maps have them along the borders.

Here's another positive post for the Garmin Etrex Vista. It's simple to use and has every feature a hunter needs. I love mine.

Garmin Etrex here also. Very usefull and easy to use. Mostly use mine to mark a kill site so I can return to pack it out. No more ribbons to hang and take down and works in the dark,(very hard to see those ribbons)and you don't have to worry about someone like me taking down your ribbons as fast as you put them up. LOL. You can leave the coordinates to your kill back at camp and others can easily find you to help with the task of packing out. When used with a topo you can pin point where you are and pick the closest/easiest route to get your animal out. If you have mapping software that you can download your waypoints to you can see where you've been or where you have had success in the past. Lots of uses for these gadgets and they are fun to use.

this was my first year using one, and it seems to work pretty well, i have the etrex legend. i think it would be real nice when hunting unfamiliar terrain. i've been hunting the same place for years, so it didn't make a big difference for me. i found i didn't look at it very often, and usually just to check it out. i did use it to mark the tree i wanted for the living room this year, though, and i went back and got it last weekend. my wife thought that was pretty cool.

I use my garmin etrex up here in Alaska all the time, one spring when we were on a spring bear hunt my friend who has the garmin emap and had the area we were in down loaded and we got caught in a white out and it showed the trail we were following and helped us get out of that valley and we could hardly see the front of our snowmachines.

Too cool Summitx. Sounds like Garmin etrex is the way to go. Thanks fellas for the feedback...now lets see what Santa says.

If a guy can ignore all the inflated ego crapola, this site can be a tremendous resource of knowledge with guys and gals that hunt everything everywhere. The above posts are a great example.
