Colorado elk hunt question

Hey Guys and Gals,

I am looking at Colorado this year for a DIY archery hunt. Are there any areas that are recommended that you are willing to share? I am not looking for honey holes. Just a unit number and a general direction will be fine. Also, any areas I may want to avoid would be great too.

I am playing the draw game in Utah and don't want to wait until I can't get up the hills anymore. I would love to shoot a branch antlered bull. I have access to horses and am willing to pack in if necessary.

Look at GMU 85. The San Isabel national forest has a lot of elk for the archery hunter willing to pack in. Get there before the muzzleloader hunters though.

Thinking of taking my wife in this area next year for a rifle or ML hunt she has a few points.

Thanks for the replies. I am hearing good things about units 25, 26 and unit 62. Any info on these units? My computer is retarded (or maybe the operator is ) and wont download the maps off of colorados dwr website. Again, any advice is welcome advice.

Zekers has a good point on 85. I grew up in that unit. There are a ton of elk in that unit. As far as finding a landowner willing to let you hunt, even for a fee, I would count that out as most of them are pretty tight on hunting. The archery hunt would be your best bet on the public land. If you're interested in this unit and look at some maps, I may be able help you out with some starting points.

Unit 521 has pretty good elk numbers also. It also has pretty good access. Might check that one out. I have seen a decent amount of elk there.
