LAST EDITED ON Sep-09-04 AT 09:02AM (MST)[p]Sorry no field photos, I did not have the digital camera with me and have not had time to take the film in and get it developed. He is not the biggest bull in the world but is a good bull for my first one. Will give the sory later. I hope the pictures come through.

Here is the story behind this bull.

I went in on Sunday late afternoon with my brother-in-law (tag), cousin and friend. He had only hiked in about ? of a mile when I cow called and heard a distant bugle. We decided it was time to move as fast as possible to close the distance down since it was getting dark (45Min). About a ? mile later I thought I was in elk heaven. We positioned ourselves on a rock saddle and started cow calling and the next valley over just exploded with bulls bulging and going nuts. This night ended with no shots but lots of bulls close by. A monster 7x7 that would have scored 360-370 and a couple 6x6?s that would have scored in the 300-350 range were within 200yds but would not come closer. We moved back and camped for the night and listened to bulls bugle all night. The morning started off with us on the same saddle and bulls going nuts again. This time we split up and each took a caller and moved lower and closer toward the bulls. My bull was about 300yds away when we first called and came in on a dead run and stopped about 5yds from the rock I was hiding behind and bugled, talk about broken eardrums. He finally stepped out but spooked and I cow called and he stopped at 14yds. I made a well-placed shot through both lungs. He went 15yds fell down got up took 2 steps and piled up. The best thing is my little cousin got to watch the whole thing while calling for me. The only thing left was to think god for the wonderful hunt and the great time spent with friends and family.

OH I almost forgot the one bad thing the pack with the rack and meat the 2 miles back to the truck

wb....great bull, great pics, and great story...thank you...love hearing how folks 'get'em'

super job--that bull looks pretty good from the side view--any measurements on him--main beam length and spread--just curious--again congrats...chris

This bulls green score gross was 311 5/8. His net is 304. I only used cow calls to get him to come in. This being my first bull with a bow I was really happy with being able to put a tag on a bull like this. I finally drew an area with almost 50% draw odds. (first time in seven years). I just hope I do not have to wait that long again. Off tonight to see if i can help brother-in-law get his.

Great story...I have had a couple similar encounters this year trying to nail my first bow bull. Unfortunately, I have closed the deal yet. Thanks for the photos and story!

Thats awesome! Great bull! I'll bet your cousin is hooked! Was there much pressure from any other hunters in the area you were hunting? I have had trouble getting bulls to come in to cow calling(I rarely bugle) the last 10 days. Yesterday (in the evening) I had 3 bulls bugling in the timber and could not get them to come in. I was close to the wallow multiple bulls were using. Only 2 more weekends for me. I need to do some changing up of tactics so I'm looking for some tips. Thanks for your story and pitures.

There is not a lot of pressure besides my buddy that hunts this area. It is to far and steep for most people to go into so it is almost like hunting private because you are not going to see more than maybe 2 other hunters. The bulls did hang up a little on us but once moved to within 300yds of them they came running to the cow calls. After I shot my bull called in 3 others. So i guess they did respond good to cow calls.

Great bull! Memories for a lifetime. Keep shooting straight. Anyone would be proud to take a bull like this. Great first archery bull!!!

Hmm, i still dont know what to do. I do hunt private property with forest access that is all mine (so to speak). These bulls pretty much are only pressured by me 1 or 2 times a week. On sept. 1 I was 75 yards from a herd bull with cows and tried to challenge him with bugles, it didnt work. Were you calling in satellite bulls? I would love to shoot a 300 class bull like yours if that was the case! Did bigger bulls have cows in your area? What suprises me is I cant even get a small bull to come in. thanks for any help. I hope to get out thursday and saturday.

That is a VERY nice elk! Heck I am willing to bet it might even make P&Y, if not pretty close! Great elk. Very nice!
