JUST GOT BACK FROM A 9 DAY HUNT ON THE NORHT SLOPE
OF THE UNITAH'S. OUT OF 6 HUNTERS IN CAMP WE FILLED
4 TAGS (3 BULLS & 1 COW). THE COW WAS THE 1ST BOW KILL
FOR A 16 YEAR OLD.(AFTER HE MISSED A 5X5 @ 20YDS).
WE QUARTERED EACH ANIMAL OUT & PACKED THEM OUT ON PACK FRAMES
ANY WHERE FROM 2-3 MILES ONE WAY.
I KNOW ALOT OF YOU ON M.M. DON'T LIKE THE UINTAHS, BUT I
WOULD RATHER HUNT A OPEN BULL UNIT THAN A SPIKE UNIT ANY DAY.
WE GOT INTO THE ELK EVERYDAY. LOTS OF BULLS BUGLING EVERY MORNING
& NITE.
AFTER READING THE ARTICLE ABOUT HITTING TOO HIGH, I HAVE TO CONFESS I HAD A SMILIAR EXPERIENCE LAST WEEK. I HIT A BULL STANDING BROADSIDE @ 50YDS, HIT A LITTLE HIGH RIGHT BEHIND THE SHOULDER. FOUND HALF MY ARROW ABOUT 100YDS AWAY. SO ABOUT 15" OF ARROW/BROADHEAD WAS STILL STUCK IN HIM. HAD GOOD BLOOD FOR 200 YDS. THEN HE WENT THRU SOME WILLOWS & WE LOST ALL SIGN.WE SEARCHED FOR 2 DAYS WITH NO LUCK. I FEEL HORRIBLE.
2 DAYS LATER I HAD A 7X7 THAT I GUESSED @ ABOUT 50 YDS, BUT WAS
NOT SURE ABOUT THE YARDAGE SO I DIDN'T TAKE THE SHOT, COULDN'T BEAR TO WOUND ANOTHER ANIMAL. A RANGE FINDER IS ON MY X-MAS LIST.

3 BULLS WERE 4X5, 5X5, 3X4.
SEEN MANY 6X6'S, EVEN ONE 7X7 THAT WOULD EASYILY SCORE OVER 350"
SO THE ELK ARE IN THE UNITAHS IF YOU WANT TO BUST YOUR HUMP.

I am heading to the North Slope to hunt during the general rifle. We have never hunted there before but went and did a little scouting about 4 weeks ago. We saw a lot of sign but would appreciate any info you would be willing to share. We will have horses with us so packing in or out any distance won't be a problem.

LAST EDITED ON Sep-19-04 AT 10:22PM (MST)[p]SNYPER, Congrats on you success. We picked up a new ranch this year on the North Slope and I hope our success will be as good as yours!

well i went back up friday to the same place
took my 10yr old boy with me. we got into the elk again, they were still there. stalked to within 35-40yds of a bull with cows, but could not get a shot as he was in the timber, every time he would stop his vitals would be covered by a tree. this played out for 2-3 minutes before a cow got suspicious and they all left.

as i was looking for my bull i hit last weekend i found another
dead elk, last years. what a monster a 6x6 frame, could not tell how he died, but i took the antlers and even found the ivories.
going to try and score him this week.will let u know

then that evening heard 3-4 more bulls bugling farther down the drainage, but my boy was too tired to go after them, and i couldn't leave a 10yr old by himself to wait for me to come back.
oh well, that's the sacrifice you make by taking little ones hunting. don't regret it at all!!!!

as for hunting the north slope, like other people have said get as far away as you can from any roads, find patches a dark timber surrounded by grassy/lush meadows (don't have to be big meadows), find a water source. if you can do those 3 things
and there is elk sign about, they will come!!!!! be patient.
i have found that the elk in the unitahs will travel 1-2 miles from bedding to feeding grounds.

as i am new to this web site - i haven't a clue on how to post pictures. i have pics but not on a digital camera, can i still post??? i really want to show you all the elk we got plus the big 6x6 i found. any help would be appreciated.

what a blast as i am only a 2nd year elk hunter

Snyper,
Just a heads up for you - It is illegal to pick up the antlers of an animal you find dead in Utah if they are still attached to the head. Other than that, congrats on getting into the elk.

Snyper, if you can e-mail me the pics I can post them for you. Or I can walk you threw on how to post pics. But either way you will have to scan them since they are on film.

That is awesome you take your boy. I let mine tag along a couple times during the season. You do have to be carefull so they don't get lost, get cold, get bored etc. but the time spent is well worth it. My boy is 6 and he is really starting to be able to hike in and it doesn't bother him. I can usually go in about 2 or 3 miles and back out in one day and he is good as long as it isn't too steep. He will remember it all his life.

Congrats again on a successfull season.

Great picture! I'm glad to hear a lot of you are taking your kids with you. I've found that letting him carry a wrist rocket keeps him pretty entertained. Made the mistake of letting him take a BB gun once.

I'm jelous that I'm not set up to pack into the Uintahs. Do you need someone to pay for gas and tag along next year? :)

iam the kid that missed the 5x5 and he forgot to tell you he and one of the other hunters with us both missed the same 5 secs before i missed. dumb bull lets us shoot at him 4 times before we got him.

BT,

Like you, I take my 6 year old out a few times during the fall as well. I've found that he can hike about the same distance you mentioned and handle it well as long as the terrain is not too rugged. I agree you have to be considerate of their needs (the young'ns) to ensure it's an enjoyable experience for both of you, otherwise you may never get them out in the hills again. I'm learning there is sacrifice in one facet or another in this regard. If I want to bring my son, then I have to accept the conclusion I may not be able to hunt as hard as I want to. But if he's having fun, it makes up for it hands down. If I don't bring him, yet able to hunt hard and fill my tag, I find myself reflecting on how great it would've been to have my boys there to see it all transpire. Sort of a double-edged sword I guess, with perhaps the happy medium being that magical moment when they come of age to go hunting with you and taking it serious enough to want to do what it takes to obtain your quarry. I envy those that have already experienced this with their kids especially at an early age. I look forward to this opportunity myself when I can take my sons (one is 6 years old, the other is 2 months old) and they're able to see me fill my tag. Better yet is when I'm able to see them fill theirs for the first time. Now that'll be a neat experience!
