Hello.......new to the forum and my first post. Was wondering if anyone has ever hunted around the Dworshak Resivour area (10A). Heading out to that area for the first time for an elk hunt. Thinking about picking up a deer tag also. Hows the elk and deer hunting in the area??? any other information would be appreciated, as for, type of terrain, any snow expected, etc... Thanks for looking!!

What an awesome forum by the way!!!

Hunted Dworshak 10A last year. Lolo B elk tag. Hunted Oct.10-17
Where are you planning to go ? We were at the head of the reservoir where the n.fork clearwater comes in. We went in by boat as many people do. There is an outfitter in Oro Fino named
Leo Crane (Clearwater Outfitters). He has some cabins on Dworshak. There is a large main cabin that'll sleep 4 or 5
with practically all the comforts of home. Large wood stove
(wood provided) full kitchen with running cold water, propane cook stove and oven, propane refrigerator/freezer, many white gas lanterns, all cooking gear you would ever need, and outhouse. 3 more small cabins,2 with bunk beds and 1 for hanging meat. He provides this as well as a good sized patio boat,to get from the boat ramp and go 6 miles up the res. where you will find the 4 wheeler he provides to haul your gear 1/2 mile up to the cabins. You're free to use the 4 wheeler (not much use for it for hunting) and the boat (very usefull for hunting) While you're there. Fishings good too. All this for
$2900.00 for up to 6 people. Split 6 ways it is damm cheap for such awesome accomadations !! Many people boat in and just set up camp on shore. Now for the bad news :(
We were in elk nearly every day. There seemed to be lots of animals around. Bad part is we could not find any horns. One of our guys saw a spike opening morning (no shot) and that was the only bull we saw the whole trip. Saw some very impressive whitetail bucks (killed one 5x5). By all means get a deer tag
it's a hair tag and that pretty much gaurentees you meat if you don't mind shooting a doe, but good chance of a nice buck too !
We also hunted there in 2002. Saw several bulls (couple of real big ones) killed a 5x5 bull, small buck , and a big doe.
This last season the bulls just did'nt seem to be there. In 2002 we had bulls respond to calls, in 2004 they did'nt at all.
Country is very heavily timbered and thick with some logged ares and meadows around. Ferns grow high and it rains like hell
nearly every day. No snow either trip, elevation is only about
2500 ft. at the cabins going up to about 4500. Temp at cabin never went below about 40. All in all a great place to go.
Some locals we talked to said that some years it's really good and others not ? I would really like to hear how you do because we are thinking of going back next year. E-mail me and i will try to help all i can ([email protected])

Then I take it all back, your report is full of lies halftruths, and inaccuracies... kidding of course. makes me want to rent the cabin nd boat and hope for a "good year".

Jamie,
I'll tell you what, even though the hunting was'nt that good in 2003 we had a hell of a great trip. It was 6 of us good friends.
We ate real good, drank real good, and we did hunt hard. Some may say "cabin,boat,4 wheeler, fridge,etc.. What a bunch of weenies. Well we're really not a "bunch of weenies" just a bunch of guys that have been hunting together forever and all in all have been pretty successfull over the years.
Just imagine coming in from hunting every day soaked to the skin
from the never ending rain, tired and cold. First guy back to the cabin builds the fire. You strip outta your soaked clothes
and back your ass up to that hot wood stove. You're feeling good now. Clothes are hung up to dry, boots are next to the stove,
Cocktail is in hand. Holy crap i ate too much. Dishes are done,
Packs are prepared for tommorow, and another cocktail is in hand. Chips are divided up cards are dealt and big nickle ante
poker game commences, loser makes breakfast. I could go on and on. Best part, puttin on dry socks and boots every mornin and being out in the woods with my best buddies, "priceless"
Leo's cabins at Dworshak are really a neat way to go if you don't have horses/mules or lots of money for guides. I know
we'll be back there.
