.44 mag for elk?

I'm getting ready to hunt elk and deer w/my .44 Magnum. I'm not set-up to load that caliber -YET. So, I'm buying my loads off the shelf. I see loads (Hornady) w/a JHP. I think of a JHP being needed on a small animal to oepn up quickly and that if it smacks a BIG-STRONG bone, like on an elk, then it may go to pieces as fail. IS that correct?

Also, can I expect the same bullet to work on deer and elk?

BTW, I've decided on a Federal 300 grain cast core bullet at about 1250fps.

Stinky...Sounds like a good choice for off the shelf loads. When you do get set up to load I like the old Elmer Keith loads myself. With the 250gr. cast #429421 bullets and 22.00grs of 2400 powder., Whoo wheee hang on to that sucker.

I shot a cow elk with those 300 grain cast core bullets several years ago. I hit her in the neck at 50 yards or so and tipped her right over with her legs sticking straight up in the air. My only advise would be to be very selective with your shots and try to get under 75 yards. Those rounds start loosing energy fast beyond that.

I recently shot a marlin lever action chambered for the 44 mag. I tell you that thing should be some good elk thumpin' medicine in close quarter shots. It think it would be a great timber hunting round for elk. I would make sure I was shooting some type of heavy duty bullet though.

Should be okay. I used my Casual .454 a couple times. It is great in the thick stuff and the shots I have taken are under 100 yards. I put a different scope on after the first year of using a pistol. I went to a 2x, alot better field of view.
