Getting ready for the Nov. hunt in the Snake River Unit (OR Side), Any good tips on hunting this country? Will be drop camped and then hunting on foot. Looking for the big boys. Any suggestions?

I've hunted this unit quite a bit and have to say, don't be holding out for the monster. There's a few around, but in general you'll find your typical 5 and 6's running around. A really large bull might put the tape at 310 but that's about it. There are a few running through there that are larger (I've seen them during the bow season) that would stretch 340, but don't count on seeing one.

Who is dropping you off? I've used a couple of different outfits for similar things during bow season and know some do's and things really not to do over there. One thing is not to go down into any canyon unless you see something. Always stay on the ridgetops. It increases the area you can glass 10 fold. Have some good bino's and be in good shape. Good luck and let me know if you have any specific questions.

.....and hey O-O, make sure you don't forget to pack in that USB cable that has been giving this board fits. Man, what a tease.

The outfit packing us in is Steens Wilderness Adventures. Talked to Shawn and Shelly for the past few years waiting to draw and they are real good people. There will be four of us and I hope to pull at least one good bull out of the group. The country is rough enough to give a bull the time he needs to get some good horn but I realize this is not an AZ unit. Any way the countdown to the hunt is coming fast and I can't wait to get started.

LAST EDITED ON Oct-22-04 AT 10:39AM (MST)[p]Any of you guys ever bow hunt over there? I am looking at taking my dad on a Drop camp bow hunt here in Oregon sometime in the next couple of years and am looking for the best place to do it.

If you don't mind me asking. What do these guys charge for a drop camp?

thanks
Rick

Shawn Steens is a very nice person. I have never heard of a single person who bad mouth his service. I have never used his service but I had a couple of friends use him. They used his drop camp service. They had a great time and saw lots of deer and elk. You are correct that the country is very tough. It will be fun to listen to your stories of how steep the hills are. I hope you are in good shape!

Shawn always tells you to bring your fishing pole are you going to bring one. He has two ways to get to the spots. One is a jet boat up the river the other is pack horses/mules. Which one are you using?

We are using mules/horses. He will pack us in and then leave, come back every couple days to check on us and pack out any elk we have down. In response to the bow hunt drop camp question, I had a friend bow hunt the unit 2 years ago and he had a great hunt. Only warning-This is extremely rough country, If your not in good shape it could be miserable. I am not bringing any fishing gear, it's Nov. in NE Oregon-COLD. Will bring a shot gun great Chukar hunting this year.

Thanks Diesel

Yeah, I know the country just have never hunted it. We hunt similiar country for deer. Did they get their elk on the bow hunt? Let us know how it goes, maybe we will do a rifle hunt over there some time.

Thanks
Rick

Be prepared for wet weather. The forecast for tonight thru friday is for rain & snow.Snow level at 4500 ft.Get a good one!

I've bowhunted this area quite a bit and wouldn't dare take my father anywhere near it. Way too ugly for him where I like to hunt. You almost have to like pain and the high of accomplishment even shooting an animal in that country with a bow. I do it, hate myself dearly at the time for it, but love the rewards the rest of the year.

As of this unit being great hunting isn't necessarily true. Certain areas hold animals well, some don't. Pretty typical, but monsters are few and far between for record book animals. As of seeing 20+ animals in the 350 plus book in there, it's a bunch of bs. There is only one unit in Oregon that has that capability and it's not there. Seeing one bull 20x does not count. I've hunted some of the most remote areas there is in that unit and have seen possibly 3 that are within that scope of animal. And I'm not swearing to it, because none of them have died from me.

If you're wondering OldOregon, that's where the link between you and Cass comes from. I pretty much stay out of it because they fight over areas I'm not familiar with, but this one I am. Telling the truth gets more merit than bragging. There are only a few people who can accurately judge a true 350+ bull on the hoof well. At 18 years old, you're not one of them. I don't knock you for your excitement over hunting, but know when to keep the bs from getting too large is a huge part of growing up. Anyhow, I'm off my .02. Good luck on the hunt and post some pics.

I live right next to the snake river unit. I pack in the snake river unit. I spend almost every weekend in the Hells Canyon or Eagle Cap Wilderness. And trust me I can judge a 350 bull. And Its not hard to see twenty of them, after spending every other weekend since I was 13 in the wilderness. BTW, most of these bulls were on wintering grounds on the lower imnaha and snake near the washington border.

good luck on your hunt, I am packing some guys in wednesday, i think they should get a bull, with the snow level dropping like it did yesterday.

I was up there above Imnaha in Sept. for archery elk, the elk seemed to all be down in the River bottom. You either had to have horses or spike camp out down there. I did see a 330 class bull in there that was full swing into the rut. We where hunting the hells canyon wilderness.

Oldoregon,

Can you post some pics of all these animals that you have seen or killed? Where did you go that had 3 feet of snow? You packed into their with 3 feet of snow? As much as your on the computer, I wouldn't think you would have time to go out every other weekend since you were 13 yrs old. What guys killed 4 six pointers?

How in the hell do you pack into a wilderness area for one day? You mean you took a horse back ride, right?

I think we need to see some pics...

Oh schnitt, here we go again.

LAST EDITED ON Nov-15-04 AT 06:52PM (MST)[p]I have never killed an elk. I have a few pics of some elk, but I dont carry my camera much, so I dont have a whole lot. I can get some pictures from my boss of the 4 bulls. And I was wrong to say they were 4 six pointers, I dont know exactly how big they were, my boss just said they were 4 really nice ones. The place I packed that had 3 feet of snow was an are called trail creek which is a tribulitary of the minam river. We pack out of Two Pan trailhead, which is on the northern fringe of the eagle cap wildeness. It is about 17 mile one way. The pass we cross over that had 3 feet is about 8000 feet in elevation. We pack into that are alot, so we had been keeping the trail open all season. The last time I packed we had a total of about three feet, but the trail was almost to the dirt. It was cool, just like a channel in the snow.

Here are a few pics.

Too bad this thread has turned into a thread about more of oldoregons B.S. I would love to here how your hunt went. Please share some details.

Thanks
Rick

Hunt went great. Went 4 for 4. 2 6X6 bulls and 2 4X4 bulls. I have no idea how to post pictures. I can't seem to get the address of the photo. Tried to follow the MM directions and still had problems. Excellent weather, saw lots of bulls and did not have any competition. It can't get any better than that.

I am from NV and I was looking for some info on archery elk hunts in Oregon. I was looking at the Snake River, Imnaha, Santiam and Mckensie units. I have never set foot in Oregon and plan on buying an over the counter tag. Any info to get me pointed in the right direction would be much appreciated.
Thanks,
Todd

Elk hunting in Oregon is (in my opinion) very tough. You have listed two areas that are about 300 miles from eachother. You will find two very different climates and two different kinds of elk from these two areas. Mckenzie and Santiam units encompass from I-5 to the crest of the cascades and the north half of the cascades. An extremely big area. The country in this area is most of the time extremely steep and although there are elk here they can be very hard to find. The western parts of the units, most of the non-national forest is tied up in private timberlands that do not allow access during archery season, it's too bad cause these are some killer areas. Of the two units I would try the santiam.

I have never hunted the Snake River or the Imnaha but have heard they are ok. The snake is extremely steep in most places too. From my experience of hunting here is that the elk are very call shy and most the times won't even answer. It makes it hard to locate elk if you aren't in an open area to glass for them. The snake and imnaha may be good for that. There is just a lot of pressure here and the elk have become too educated. One piece of advise, don't go to murderers creek, thats where all the californians are, it's a real mess. Good luck and let me know if you have anymore questions.
