He had an awesome time. 21" G1's pretty cool.

I have never posted pictures before and I hope this works, if not, he passed up over 20 bulls the first day in the 300 to 350 range. I told him when he saw one he wanted to take it, it's his tag. So many people kept telling us not to shoot "unless it's 380+!" I personally don't think most people could tell you what a big bull scores. If they saw a 350 bull, they would swear he was 380. I know there are huge bulls on this unit, and so does my brother, we saw them scouting. But actually finding one, while your season is open, well that is another story. Had I not just spent 9 days down on the San Juan hunting my elk with a guy who knew what a big bull looked like, I would have not known really what we were looking at, and I still misjudged my brothers bull. I thought it was right around the 350 range.
We put this one to bed, along with a cool 7X7 with matching cheaters off the base of his swords on Sunday night. Monday morning was foggy and raining/snowing 9:30 finally the clouds lifted and we snuck into the canyon we could hear them in. Saw him bedded and Jesse said that was the one. I looked at him with the scope and told him his 4ths were kind of short. He said he didn't care and was going to shoot. I then said he was kind of narrow. And again he says, "I don't care what he score's, I am shooting him". Well, 338 yards with his .300 Ultra Mag did the job in about 10 seconds. Dropped to the ground raised his head, and fell over dead. Was an amazing hunt. Not bad for a 17 year old kid with one bonus point. Makes ya mad doesn't it. Well, just goes to show, we all have a chance to draw. I drew San Juan Archery with 7 points and felt lucky. Anyway, his bull goes just over 360, and he couldn't be happier. He says when he draws again when he is 40, he'll hold out. Funny thing is, he had all 11 days of the season off of school. He ended up only missing 3 days.
I don't know how my brother and I are going to go back to an any bull unit and hunt now. You hunt one of these Limited Entry places, and it ruins you. Good luck to all who are waiting there turn. You will have the hunt of a lifetime. I only hope the state of Utah doesn't screw it all up with some of the new proposals that are out there.

Congrats to you and your brother. That is a beautiful bull. Utah is definately a great state to be hunting elk in. I too hope it continues to be that way.

Thanks for posting a great bull and congrats to your brother. Sounds like he is on the way to being the kind of hunter we need more of.

Jason,
The pics turned out nice. Jesse did a good job and had excellent mentorship from the big bro! Keep up the good work. That definetley is a nice bull. Hope to see some pics of your archery bull. I am glad that you all had a good time and were able to harvest such beautiful animals. Thanks for sharing.

BOM,

I would like to make a couple more comments about your story and pics.

You say doesn't it make ya mad? Hell no it doesn't make me mad. He played the game and drew out. He is also very appreciative of his chance to go on such a fine hunt and defying the odds. I have waited many years, but that is OK.

Also, what impresses me is the fact that you hope a good thing isn't jeopardized even after you drew and hunted the area. Most would look to the second chance ASAP, but you hope others get to experience what this young man was fortunate to experience while he is young.

I like the attitude and comments you made. I hope he gets another chance one day. Guys like him deserve it.

I like the story, and I,m glad to see you guys didn,t pay 5000 plus for a guide. you went out and did it yourself congrats to you and your brother.

Hey, nice bull!! Your statement of "doesn't it make you mad" makes me think, yah, that does bother me some that a 1 bonus point holder can draw that tag over someone who has max points. Don't get me wrong, the DWR has allowed anybody with any amount of bonus points to put in so you would be a fool not to put in, but look at it this way, does anyone standing in a long line like someone butting in front of them especially when that line is 13 years long. The DWR won't take the attitude of "wait your turn" because it would affect their pocket book. This has nothing to do with your brother, he was just a lucky recipient of a screwed up system that is more concerned with it's pocket book than anything else (another example, the new elk proposal for utah's elk). I have decided that if the DWR has anything to do with a subject its first concern is money, two more examples, the fishlake cow massacre and just look at our deer herds! Well, enough babbling, nice bull, congrats!

Thanks for all the replies. The gun is a .300 RULM Laminate, stainless and shooting 180 grain factory sciroccos.
As for the "Make you mad statement" I found out I drew my San Juan tag first and was so excited, then he pulls this tag and kind of stole my thunder you could say. I wasn't upset, but I know of many who are. But, I did not have max, and if they only gave tags to those with max, I wouldn't have drawn for years and years and years. I am fine with how it is done. If you have the max, your odds are getting better and better every year. With more archery and Muzz tags now, your odd are nearly 1 in 1 on a lot of units. But if you don't have the max, at least you have some chance.
As far as spending the money on a guide. I spent a lot of time deciding if hiring a guide for my San Juan hunt would be something I wanted to do. Then my brother drew and it was decided. There was no way I would be able to scout enough on the San Juan and Pahvant. Mine being an archery hunt, it was a no brainer.
I look back on the decision to hire a guide and wonder how in the world I ever thought of not hiring one. Several points being: 1)You wait forever to draw this tag, you'll probably never draw again, why not increase the odds of getting a bigger bull. 2)You have no problem spending money on a new gun, new truck or 4-wheeler, and a ton of gas money scouting the place. 3)once in a lifetime opportunity, you see the biggest bull ever in range, anyone there to tell you not to shoot, because "we can do better"?
Now I know there are many who will read this and say, well those with money can do that. Well I am not one with tons of money. But hunting is a huge priority in my life, and I just made it work. I drew a Wyoming G tag this year and would have loved to go with a guide, ride you in, feed you. Instead, I packed in on rented horses on the opener. Then packed in solo (backpack) next weekend and killed the biggest buck I have ever had a chance to shoot at. Then packed him out. (ouch!)
I know there is alot in finding the bull yourself in the summer and doing it all yourself, been there and done that, and the satisfaction is great. But I had a tag I knew I probably would never have again. So I hired a guide, and we hunted harder than I have ever hunted. It took 9 days and my guide walked me to death. I passed up a lot of bulls. I would have shot most of them, had I gone on my own. For that one fact I am glad I had a guide there with me.
So, if one or many of you draw a tag next year, think about it, you probably won't draw again, why not? Plus it's fun to have someone there who is focused only on getting you the biggest bull on the mountain, that is worth every penny.
As far as Jesse hiring a guide. Well, he thought long and hard about it and relized he is only 17, has no money, and probably will draw again someday. We actually got hooked up with a guide on the opener, just wanted to film, and didn't charge us anything, just showed us some spots, Thanks Layne.
Again, I hope that everyone that has waited so long for a tag, will get one, and be able to experience what my brother and I were able to this past September. I will never forget it, and am trying to figure out how I can buy a conservation tag now. Maybe sell my house? I think I have enough equity. Well, my wife will probably have something to say about that.

WOW one POINT?

I wish I had that kind of luck but who knows ???

As for the waiting game I look at it this way if I did have max point and drew I still would hafta get back in line and start again tell I had max point again so that would take what? a few hundred years so it is a once in a lifetime that way or it can be ran like it is and I take the chance of maybe never drawing or maybe drawing more then once I am going to go for more then once or nothing

There is a lot of people mad at the UDWR and I can see why but I do not see many options for them without screwing it all up I do think there are a lot of bulls dieing of old age and we could probably ad a few more tags in some units but hell I am just a guy that wants to get out there and hunt myself so I can buy a over the counter tag every year tell I draw and still have a good chance at bringing home meat or a TROPHY (please)

There are only a hand full of states that let you buy a over the counter elk tag and I am glad I live in one

I will wish you all GOOD LUCK in the draws but not tell I get my tag first LOL

CONGRADS on a couple of great bulls

P.S hope you like the 270wsn
