I bought landowner deer tags for 5a new mexico and will be hunting Nov. 9-16. The landowner called yesterday and said he had a couple of bull tags remaining and was I interested. Just wondering if any of you guys know much about the quality of elk in this area - is a 300 class bull a possibility this time of year. the ranch consists of about 4000 acres and the landowner said that if bad weather occurs could get a large influx of elk onto ranch. thanks for any info

hunttx-I am from NM and I would say yes. Can you mention the ranch name and the approx cost of the elk authorization? Send me a an e-mail if you'd like. Jim

If you talk to him again, ask how the weather, roads, and everything is shaping up this year so far. I have a public lands deer tag for the same area and season and area, and am just curious. Thanks.

I've hunted on the 5A side twice, only saw Deer. Very nice Muleys all over, but no Elk. Is the Bull tag also only a land owners? If so I'm thinking it shouldn't cost very much.

You have weather headed in there next week if one4 more front blows in you will be in the elk!

the guy is wanting $2500 for the tag and an additional $500 kill fee. Does that sound a little high for the area - I don't mind spending the money if it's a good area for nice bulls - but I haven't heard of this being much of a trophy area. Also this is unguided - just a trespass fee. What do ya think - I'm there for muleys, just thought an elk tag in the pocket wouldn't be a bad idea - just sounds a little high.
