Great late rifle hunt

At some point I would like to go on a late hunt for elk. I am willing to draw a tag, want wait for it. I just think it would be neat, and different, to hunt elk when it is cold and snow covered. The silence, stillness and secludedness of the woods in winter fascinates me. Not to mention toughing it out camping when it is cold.

I am also guessing deep snow might make such a hunt impossible.

Any ideas of where to go, (units & tags) for such a hunt? I am not willing to hit an OTC unit late and be lucky to find a shooter bull in a week. That said I do not want a migration hunt where you see tons of elk, something in between, hard work but elk to be found. Willing to pay for a drop camp.

Thanks Donv

Colorado has lots of late cow elk hunts and some late bull hunts during december and January. Many on public land. Below is a link to there website which shows what was available for this year. I have routinely hunted cow elk in these late hunts and always have a great time. The snow and lack of hunting pressure can't be beat. Hope this helps.

Most of the draw units in Idaho have late October-mid November hunts. Wyoming has some on the east side of Yellowstone in late November, early December that are not like typical migration hunts. Of course, a late AZ or NV hunt would be great, if you could draw the tag. You should get a taste of late season hunting in the Henries. Good luck and let us know how it went.
