Just wondering how my fellow elk hunters did during the utah muzz elk hunt. I passed up 4 spikes opening morning in hopes of taking a brute. I also watched a guy pop off eight shots at a nice bull missing every time. monday i shot a 4x5 bull after i shot him i blood trailed him for 200 yards and watched an older man and his son put the finishing touches on him. The older gent asked me if i had just shot him and i told him i had and he offered the elk to me but i told him to keep the bull because he rightfully killed him and therefore was entitled to him it made his day and tonite i got a call from him saying he would like to bring me some elk steaks and thank me again for helping him notch his tag. Now i am headed out again in the morning to find the king of the mountain and put the hunting season behind me. I guess i did the right thing here but still have my doubts about it. any way i look at it i still got my shot off and thats what counts

After hiking in 6.5 miles into the backcountry, I did get my chance at the king of the mountain. At first light I walked right onto 3 very large bulls, all six points. I took a shot and dropped one of them. He got back up and dropped again behind some oakbrush where I could not see him. I sat there for a few minutes waiting for him to expire. Then I walked over there and to my suprise he was gone. I followed the blood trail for over 300 yards where he went into some pines on the north slope of the mountain that had very deep snow. Needless to say, I couldn't find him. I'm not sure how I will ever get over this. I'm so depressed about it right now. Chalk one up for the big one that got away.

There is nothing worse than losing an animal, especially when its a trophy. Sorry :(

I took a six pt sat morning we had been watching 4 bulls througout the week with spotters. They were about 3 miles away but down 2000ft and back up. I ended up shooting him at 8.30 am. I bought a new encore this summer but never had time to shoot it. I used a knight disc with 100 grains a pyro and 300 grain sabot. For the second year in a row my range finder died. I got with in a bout 200 yards from where they were bedded in the snow and just crawled closer with my snipod all set up. I was waiting for the best one to stand up and about 136 yds (ranged later) he stood up and I shot. He went about 25 yds stood there and disapeared. I went to where he was laying and found blood. I sat for a few minutes then looked over and he was dead at few feet away. My partners later that day missed two other six pts that this bull was with. After glassing thousands of acres I shot this bull about 400 yards of where I missed them last year. Russ

Hey if it makes you feel any better dropping a bull right away means either you hit the spine(and he would still be there) or you hit close enough but high and shocked him. Like a KO.

Odds are really high that all you did was poke a hole and he'll be fine. With an arrow they are so clean wounds they are almost always fine. With a MZ you don't destroy so much meat and the odds of an infection stay fairly low. Go to a HP rifle that puts a huge wound channel in and the odds of infection go up a bit more. BUT they get gored, cut etc.... all the time in the wild, get infections and get over it.

If you are upset you lost a wallhanger because he's not on the wall I can't help you. But if you are afraid he's dead somewhere, I seriously doubt it.

Good luck BBH, glad to hear there are still some good guys out there, thanks for the story. Better then the ones where someone tries to steal an elk. I hate those.
