My 1st Elk

Well, it took me a while to get around to posting this, but here it is. This was my first elk hunt, and I know I was quite lucky to be able to harvest even this modest 4X4. I started visiting this site back in the early spring and got a lot of good advice from some of the veterans here. I had an either sex elk tag and a buck tag for area 75 in Colorado. My buddy and I scouted the area at the end of July and hunted the 2nd Rifle season in Mid-October. We hunted Missionary Ridge and it was pretty crowded, but we aren't afraid to put in the leg-work to get past everyone else. My buddy shot a nice muley Sunday and I shot my elk on Monday. It was a great experience and I am hooked for life. I would like to thank everyone here for the help and the info. Thanks also to Monster Muleys for having such a great website.

Cant see the picture?
How was Missionary, I hunt on the west side of the valley but up higher near Purgatory in 74. I wanted to drive over just to see how crowded it was but didn't get time. See many animals?

LAST EDITED ON Dec-07-04 AT 11:29PM (MST)[p]Hard work pays off and your gratitude to those that pointed you in the right direction is commendable. Thanks for sharing and congrats on the elk. Got a picture of your friends buck?

Congrats on a fine bull. I was on Missionary Ridge for the early hunt and had the same scenario as you did. Got in deep and harvested. As long as they keep the dirt raods closed, that area should be worth a look. Closing the access roads into the canyons keeps a lot of road hunters out.

Congrats again.
