Now that the proclamation is out, who hear would consider putting in for the late LE hunt, rather than the rut hunt?

No late stuff here. Heat of the rut rifle elk shoot for me.;-) Besides, November is too cold.

I don't know where the proclamation is. Look on the website like I do.

It is on the website anaconda..........

Lots of broken horn and mucho private ground migration by then.... I'm sticking with bow bull in the San Juan........

ktc

FINALLY YOUR CHANCE TO HUNT THE POST 'RUT' AND YOU DON'T EVEN ACT LIKE YOUR GONNA APPLY FOR IT???

REMEMBER AS OTHER MM WHINERS HAVE PREVIOUSLY STATED,THAT HEAT OF THE RUT IS JUST WAY TOO EASY,YOU GONNA FEEL GUILTY WHEN YOU TAKE THAT TROPHY BULL IN THE HEAT OF THE RUT???

THANKS TO ALL THE 'AVERAGE JOE WHINERS' I CAN SEE THE LE UNITS HEADED IN A NOT SO GOOD DIRECTION!!!

THE ONLY bobcat SAYING IT ONE MORE TIME,REMEMBER:LE UNITS WERE NEVER SET-UP FOR AVERAGE JOE'S WANTING TO TAKE 300" CLASS BULLS!!!

Give me 7 days and a foot of snow in November on Monroe, Beaver or Pahvant and see what kind of bull I bring home. I hope everybody wants to hunt them in the rut.

LAST EDITED ON Dec-23-04 AT 08:31AM (MST)[p]Feel guilty you say????

Hell no! The only thing I am going to feel guilty about is making SaddleSore haul him out while I lean against a tree with a Bud. That and paying a grand to stuff his head. I will get over it though. Might have to buy SaddleSore a beer after he gets done working his (_!_) off.

When/if it does happen, sure, I will put an asteric on the photo. Kind of like the Houston Rockets had to with their championship while Jordan was out. This way, all MM people know it doesn't really count.

Utah's LE, next best thing to a high fence without the fence! Hey, that could be the catch phrase for the DWR. I like the it. The elk herd and the phrase.

Roper, give me 10 days in the heat of the rut on the Pahvant and see what I bring back. ;-)

KTC, don't say that they are like high fence hunts too loud, or you'll have Cass and all of his buddies start putting in for these hunts like crazy.

PleaseDear,

You are right, most, if not all, of the big bulls are getting pretty broke up by November. This late hunt is definitely going to tempt hunters to trespass on private lands.

How many of you will consider going for the high dollar premium tag and hunt all four season's? If they are taking three percent of all the tags, the San Juan will only have one premium tag available. I don't see the odd's on one tag being very good, unless most just don't want to spend that kind of money. The draw for the next couple of years will certainly be a guessing game. A late hunt in the next couple of years before 7-8 year old bulls get shot down to 5-6 year old bulls might be better than holding out for rut hunt.

Premium................ at 5% of the tags going to that tag pool, it equates out to like .95 and .97 of a tag in most units, so 1 tag, no bonus point pool tag and $508.00 for what was $20.00 not to long ago.

The very few units that will have 2-3 tags are the same units that have 3500-4500 applicants already!!

The temptation to be able to hunt ALL the weapon seasons is inviting but it basically will be like putting in the Point Code for yet another point.

Throw in enough vacation time to actually hunt ALL seasons and lest the 'kitchen pass' from the little Mrs.......... gulp!

Odds wise, I think the lower the harvest percentage the better the odds will be, such as bow-bull, late bull, mzzldr-bull, premium-bull then rifle 'ktc' rut bull tags.......hehe

Gotta apply to draw though.....with Bonus point type draw, ya can draw with 0 points and not draw with the max.-13 points ....

Just give me 10 days on any of the premium elk units, and I'll be happy....
It is going to be interesting to see how the masses vote (apply) this year. Sometimes a new hunt will bring many applications as it sounds pretty interesting. Don't think the late hunt will do that though.. I don't think guys who have mega-bonus points are going to want the broke up bulls!
And there is nothing funner than harvesting a screaming bull that you have challenged and called in during the heat of the rut!!
And as far as the premium hunts, don't think that is going to be a big draw for apps, either. It would be tough to go through all three hunts and not kill something in the earlier hunts, granted the success rate gets better as you move from archery to rifle. It would be a great tag to have, but I'm afraid I'd waste the last two hunts..
IMO, this is just going to make the odds of drawing the "normal" permits that much tougher due to the 30% of the permits that will be taken out of the "normal" pool and moved, yet the odds will be better for the later hunts, as most hunters prefer the "normal" hunt dates. The lower odds also will apply to the "premium" hunt as there will be less tags to have a chance to draw from, even though probably less hunters will put in for them.
Either way, should be really interesting to see how it all develops. Good luck to all now matter which way you "vote"..

A bad day hunting is better than a Good Day at Work!!

I think it would depend on how many points you have. If you have a lot of points, hold out, but it would be better than not going for those with few points. If you got lucky with the weather, it could be an excellent hunt, and bad for those holding out for next year. If I were not stuck in the deer pool with lots of points, I would try for a late Utah elk hunt. I am going to give drawing a late AZ elk hunt a try in 05, as I lost my points there this year.

Pleasedear,
It is good to see that you are going with a bow. Was not to long ago you were telling me I was crazy. Hope we both draw this year.....yea right! If you draw and need some help, let me know. Tagging along on a Limited entry Elk hunt sounds funner than OTC elk in Utah. I will have 9 point going into the draw this year, looking at the draw odd's last year it looks pretty good for me since I am not looking at San Juan, Monroe, Pahvant or SW Desert. Just can't wait 5 plus more years for those units. Have a Merry Christmas! Alan

I was curious if anyone knows what the proportion of tag numbers will be that go muzzy, archery, rifle, and late season? Also, if approximately the same number of tags as last year for muzzy, archery, rifle with just the addition of late season tags added on?

Elkslayer,
I'm going with a bow??? HuH? Like thats something new???
You where crazy back in the day of the units with the Auxillary Permit option--not to go for one of them and if my memory serves me right you hadn't ever killed an animal with your bow yet....... I"m sure you'll be in the Bonus Point pool tag this year and get ya a great bull to go along with that real nice buck ya got.
Your buck looks alot like the buck on the cover of the new 2005 proc..

Yea Robb, you are right again. You were stressing that it was crazy on the units with the auxillary permits, I had killed elk with my bow, just not any big ones. Probably was the smartest thing to do back then, I was just getting tired of waiting. Will have to pick up the proc. and see what that deer looks like. May be interested in hooking up with you on that high country mule deer hunt one of these years. Hope the draw god's are with us this year. Alan

jims,

My understanding is that muzzeloader and archery will be about the same as last year. The change is that 30% of the any weapon will be moved to a November hunt. Also, there is a premium hunt which the hunter can hunt all four seasons. The premium is only 3% of the total tags, which figures into only about 1 tag per unit. This hunt is definitely not for max point holders.
