Hey guys. I'm already planning for next year, and I've noticed that the ballistics that federal has listed for the 165 grain nosler solid base bullets look pretty good. I have zero experience with these bullets, so in your opinion, are the 165s enough bullet for bull elk out of a 300 win mag?

I'm also looking at the 180 grain accubonds. Any opinions are appreciated.

Thanks, and happy holidays.

I've used 165s in my 30-06 and knocked down elk. They should do the trick out of a 300mag.

I don't have any experience with the solid base. I do have 9 kills with the Accubond. I understand that the solid base is a great bullet, and should do well on game as large as elk. If you are shooting factory ammo, buy a box of each and hunt with what groups best in your rifle. mtmuley

LAST EDITED ON Dec-24-04 AT 08:54AM (MST)[p]In 2002 for a bull elk hunt I used Fed 180 gr Noslers in my 300 Win Mag, upon the reccomendation of my guide. Both shots at 391yds; first was a double lunger, the second broke the spine, and he dropped. We recovered both NP's and they looked great. I took the slugs to a Nosler booth at the RMEF Camp and they said it appeared to retain about 90% of the original NP.

I also got my best groups with the 180gr NPs.
