Has anyone heard if they have killed the state wide elk and deer in Utah?(govener's,conservation purchased tag)

I think these hunts go way too long. They should go no later than Nov 30th.I know alot of money is raised with these tags, but I question the ethics of killing on winter ranges, after 2000 wana-be guides are trying to get the $10,000 finders fee.

What do you think?

I think until you cry babys put $100,000 into wildlife you should quit worrying about how and when they kill ONE (1) damn deer and elk a year. Look at all the freakin deer and elk laying along the road dead. You think them killing one a year makes a pissin bit of difference. NO! The money they dump into wildlife benifits everyone including you 338. Have a nice day........
Ps:where the he!! did this 10,000 finders fee thing come from??
Everyone keeps talking about 10k finders fee but I dont know anyone who has collected on it. Later.......

I think this is an odd question coming from the same guy who favors the wildlife convention to raise money. Now, I am not starting that argument again, but the whole reason for the convention is to raise cash for wildlife. One guy pays 80k for the same reason and you wonder if that is right?

Flip-Flop

I have a friend with a signed contract.$10,000 to take guide and hunter to 400 inch bull. The guy that helped the kid who killed the state record typical was offered $10,000 by two guides if he knew where there were more.
I'm not going to debate the good that comes from the sell of the tags.
No it's not fair that we run over animals and trophies are poached .
But when by their instincts to survive the winter they go to the winter range,(where they are most vulnerable,
Webster's definition ,capable of being physically wounded or open to damage or attack).

KTC I'm on solid ground when it comes to conservation groups.tags, and fundraising for habitaat.20 + years membership in several groups will speak for it's self.

Back to my question .Are they dead yet?And is late Dec fair chase in Utah.

Would we raise that much less money with a slight date change?
I applied for most of the sportsman tag's and would say they should be changed too.

Maybe instead of changing hunt dates, something should be done to eliminate the "finders fee" that is put on the head of the bucks.

Maybe if guides could only guide in small areas of Utah, the Governors tag would not be the big, controversial subject that it is every year.
As far as I know, Colorado, Wyoming, Nevada, & Idaho guides can only guide in their little area of state, not statewide.

Here in Utah, a guide can put out the word of a $10k finders fee and hundreds of people search the state for the big buck hoping to collect. Then the guide takes the hunter to the deer.

Colorado also offers statewide tags, but we never hear much about how people are searching that state for the giant. The "Finders Fee" is what has become a joke surrounding the statewide conservation tag, not the hunt dates.
If it wasn't for the hundreds of people searching the state for Mr. Big, it could be a real challenge for the hunter to find a super buck on his own. Then it would be hunting again.

That's just my opinion on the subject.

Thanks Brian
Sometime's it's not hunting.

Just to let everyone know, I was involved with the statewide deer tag this year. Myself and the 3 or 4 guys that was helping me found several bucks over the magical 200" mark. No finders fee was ever offered! The people that bought the tag hired us to find a buck and that is what we set out to do. As of today the gentleman that has the tag has not been to Utah to hunt and at this point he will not be hunting. So you all can quit worrying about whether he killed one or not. I hope the money raised from this tag helps restore some critical winter habitat so we can have great mule deer for my kids and yours in the future. Thanks and God Bless.

Good post Brian and some very good insight. I agree guides should only be able to guide in certain areas and not statewide. I think this would help as you say. Thanks

He spent $80K on a tag and didn't even come to Utah to try and fill it? Wow, talk about having money to burn.

roperlt,

I have no problem with a guy hiring a guide to help him out. Where I see that a problem lies is when a finders fee is up for grabs. You guys may not have offered one this year, but in the past, a $10k fee has been offered and been paid.

That stuff is what gets people all fired up about the entire Govenors Tag thing. IMO, I think the statewide conservation tag is a great thing, it raises needed money. And, no matter what time of year you're hunting big deer, they're hard to find and rarely easy if you're on your own looking.
But, the problem is when everyone in the state is crawling every road in search of Mr. Big so they can cash in on the $10k.

It makes "hunting" look real bad. IMO

Founder,
I've been involved with the statewide elk tag in '01 and the deer tag this year and we have never offered a finders fee and never will. These guys hire me to guide them and find the best animal we can find. I can't speak for all the outfitters in the state of Utah, however the ones that I'm associated with all feel the same way. I know that some people feel like it is a peice of cake to be able to hunt anywhere in the state for 4 months, but let me tell you it's not as easy as some people think. The hundreds of hours spent looking through a pair of binos or a spotting scope and the thousands of miles you put on a vehicle is just a small part of the big picture. I just hope everyone can see that we are going in the right direction with these conservation tags and the money they raise. The last thing I want to do is give hunting a bad name! This is my life and my childrens future.
Thanks for creating a great place for us to express our feelings.

The statewide Sportsmans Draw buck was shot in the Henry's in early November. I don't know about any of the other statewide tags.

Not sure what the final score ended up being, but it was around 200" NT.

I know the hunter and a few of the guys he had helping him. None of them were paid one red cent. He's a regular sportsman like most of us who was fortunate enough to draw the coveted tag.

He spent a huge number of days down there from bow season until he shot his 10x10 monster.

It sounded from the stories like the epic hard work gone good type of hunt we all dream of. Too bad he choked up so bad on his TV interview that was posted about here awhile back :)

cheers,
Pete

The sportsmans elk was killed last week. He was unguided and did not pay any finders fee, althoughseveral people asked for a finders fee to show him good bulls. His bull supposedly scored 380..

As of last friday the statewide elk had not been killed yet. I will talk to some people and see if I can find out weather they killed yet or not.

What kind of a hunt is it when there are more than 2 people (one to hunt and one to help pack)involved? You may as well just spend the money and go on one of those "canned hunts" it's basically the same when there are dozens or more people involved in finding/guiding you to your animal of choice. Is that really "fair-chase" hunting, especially when after the kill, all of the talk about B&C(fair chase hunting organization) scores begins to fly?

roperlt, im a bit confused.. Mossback has the contract for the gov tag deer right? How are you still involved? or are you not involved? I am just trying to understand because you said you have been involved since the begining..and in another post you said mossback has the contract..on a side note, I dont believe people are "worried" about what the tag holder kills. I believe its an interest in what type of animal they find. I know I am curious about what gets killed by the gov tag... maybe because your involved in the hunt, that aspect doesnt matter to you.
