I got my dad the "Power Bugle" for Christmas and both me and him suck at bugling. We seem to scare away the bulls, not bring them in.
Do any of you guys/gals have this bugle and can you give me hints and techniques about bugling?
Thanks

150fighter, go buy some videos that will show you how to bugle. I have never hunted elk but I do have some videos that teach you how to call them. They seem to be very informative. fatrooster.

150 Its not really necessary to be an expert at bugling. Just use your bugle to locate where the bull is then stalk on in watching the wind. I personally am a crappy bugler meaning most of the time I sound like a small bull and that helps not spooking the bulls (in my opinion). cow calling, talking etc is important also so get a cow call and use the bugle for locating where the bull/bulls are at...... Thanks, Allen Taylor......

Yea like it was said before, get some videos or tapes and try to copy the sounds that they make while calling either the guides or the elk. Then practice practice practice.

I have tried out several diff't bugles over the years & the Power Bugle is by far my favorite. The key to that bugle is to keep the read tight against the air passage to minimize the air flow; that way it wont sound too much like a tube. In addition, make sure you bring extra reads along on your hunt, I have found that the latex doesnt last long in an enviornment that has lots of moisture.

Like everyone else said before, practice, practice, practice. Don't over bugle & practice just as much w/a cow call because it most cases the cow call is what will seal the deal. Good luck!

I can't bugle with a diaphram, but I can turkey call and cow call with one. I need more practice. I have a "lil bugle" from Carlton Calls and learnt how to use it with one of his videos. It's easier than using a diaphram call.

As far as cow calling goes, the Primos "Hoochie Mama" is by far, the easiest to use and trust me it works. It's a hand held and operated cow call. I highly recommend it, like the HoytHntr said, the cow call seals the deal.

This past season I bugled an elk in close utilizing the bugle tube and simultaneously being able to cow call at the same time to give a "mutiple elk" effect.

Called in my Manti bull with a Power Bugle, rakin trees sealed the deal. He came in lookin for a fight, bugled and tore up a tree at 25yds, killed him at 8 steps.
That call works well, easy to sound like a young squealy bull. But, like was mentioned earlier, bring lots of bands for it. The latex breaks down quickly, being exposed to the air. Think they need to come up with a cap for them.

They do make a cap for the power bugle. I bought one for mine. It works great. Also, they have a little contraption to hold a couple of extra rubbers for when you need to replace. I have been happy with the call.

Thanks for all the replies, I'll look into buying a video to practice with. I got one more quick question about elk hunting. Where do all of you guys find the big bulls? I live in the rocky mountains and we maybe see one big bull a year, even if we are hunting for them. Where do you go to find the harems and herds.

Thanks alot

LIKE MENTIONED ABOVE,GET SOME EXTRA BANDS,THEY EVEN MAKE DIFFERENT PITCH BANDS,I PREFER THE WHITE ONES!!!

REMEMBER YOU'RE NOT TRYING TO BE THE BADDEST SOUNDING BULL ON THE MOUNTAIN,SOME OF THEM VIDEO'S WILL TRY AND TEACH YOU TO SOUND LIKE A 500" BULL,IN MY OPPINION THATS NOT THE WAY TO DO IT!!!

THE ONLY bobcat HOPING TO USE MY POWER BUGLE ON AN LE HUNT BEFORE ALL MY BANDS ROT!!!

Where do you live and hunt? How do you hunt? How far from the road do you hunt? You have to be hunting in an area where bigger bulls are at least possible. Then it is a matter of getting far enough from a road and finding them with enough shoe leather. It can also be a matter of season. There might be lots of elk in archery season, but they may move to private ground when the guns start popping.

As far as learning the right sounds to make so they don't go the other way, I haven't found anything better than Elknuts videos/CD's. Good luck

No matter how good you get, you'll find that most elk that have been hunted will run away from you. The cow call is more effective. You will find a bull from time to time that will come in to a bugle, but most will round up their cows and be on their way.

I have owned a Power Bugle for a few years and have had very good success with it. It is very easy to use and makes a good sound.
Good Luck
