Six points in Colorado, need info on other states

It seems the visitors to this website are a very helpful bunch, so I thought I would pose a rather extensive question. I have six points in Colorado for elk, should I cash those in or wait? If so, where? Also, I am wanting to apply in every state I can. I have already submitted for Utah and Wyoming. As for Nevada, Montana, Idaho, and New Mexico, can those who are knowledgeable about these states clue me in. I read the huntin fool magazine, but sometimes I don't think it tells the whole story. I am wanting what most serious hunters want, solitude - which usually comes with a limited tag, a large number of animals, and a good chance to take an elk in the 300 to 350 inch class. I prefer muzzleloader but enjoy archery and will use a rifle in the right unit. Thanks for any help you can offer.

Personally I'd dump your points on a statewide muzz tag. Tons of good areas with elk easily meeting your expectations. As a nonresident?? it will takes 2 points to guarantee a tag. You are a long, long way from drawing the premium NW units but there are a few units in the 6-7 point range that are descent. Just my opinion....

I agree. When I burn my 13 points I will use them up every 2-4 years in the future.

There are some good bow units in CO you can pull very soon.

Huntin Fool is exactly what you said, it does have some good info but you can bet the choices they list for 1st and 2nd get hammered with apps.

I live in sw Colo in Montrose. I am very familiar
with units 76 and 61. You are a few years
away from drawing 61. In unit 76 rifle is 7, muzz 10
and bow 5.61 much better for quality but not
a good area to see lots of elk. 76 much better to
see large numbers of elk but very few over 300
and almost none over 330. I video elk in 76 from
June to Nov. Roy in Montrose

A buddy of mine hunted Unit 61 this year - he killed a 350 Class bull and saw a couple others. I thought he had 8 preference points this year and hunted with a rifle. I can put you guys in contact with one another if interested.

You might look into 66 for a muzzle loader tag. I know of one 370 bull coming out of there two years ago but that's it. I imagine the quality is good but I have not hunted it...Steve
